While the argument that it is up to the legislature, Read More

By ROBYN SCHULTZ, Chair
Democratic Party of Los Alamos County

The Democratic Party of Los Alamos County joins Chairman Gibson and other local Republicans in support of the UNM-LA Mil Levy.

When I graduated from high school in upstate New York, I chose to attend the local community college for my first two years. Classmates came back from their far flung institutions with exciting tales of huge lecture halls and the anonymity of being at a large school. More than a few returned prematurely from their college experiences, not yet ready for such dramatic changes.

In contrast, my experience was one Read More

Letter to the Editor: Look at UNM-LA Tax Proposal on Its Own Merits

By ROBERT GIBSON, Chair,
Republican Party of Los Alamos

Los Alamos voters have a rare opportunity to consider a tax increase proposal that actually has sound justification, the UNM-LA mil levy increase.

No community owes more to education nor values it more highly than ours. UNM-LA is an important local educational resource. It does its job well. Its graduation and job placement rates far exceed state averages.

UNM-LA’s operating mil levy has not increased since its founding 30 years ago. Alone, that is not a valid argument for the proposed hike. Their revenue from the existing levy has increased Read More

Letter to the Editor: The Truth About the Mil Tax Increase

The Truth About the Mil Tax Increase
By PETER HEIMDAHL
Los Alamos

Here we go again. Los Alamos voters just approved a large real estate tax assessment to benefit K-12 schools, and now all the town’s power elites are lined up (an ominous omen for ordinary folk) with a very well financed (a big red flag) campaign to push another special election to TRIPLE the tax assessment levied for the local community college.

Los Alamos is a fairly affluent town, but we have a substantial population of fixed income taxpayers who simply cannot afford an increased tax bite. Sewage rates and homeowners Read More

Letter to the Editor: Murdered Schoolchildren Killed in ‘Gun Free Zones’

By THOMAS J. FARISH
Parent of three LAHS graduates, and one current student

I must respond to Ms. Nancy Schick’s letter complaining about the Los Alamos Schools leasing the old Pueblo gym to the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club for their Gun Show.

I find it appalling that Ms. Schick seems ignorant of the fact that that all of the murdered schoolchildren she alludes to were killed in “gun-free zones.” Perhaps we should re-name those areas “defenseless-victim zones” because that illustrates much more clearly their effect on the safety of our children.

I pray that in future we will have the Read More
