Letter to the Editor: Debate Not About Right to Own Guns

By Nancy Schick
Los Alamos High School teacher, retired
2005 New Mexico Teacher of the Year

This weekend there is a gun show at the Pueblo Gym. The gym is on a site owned by the Los Alamos Public Schools. This means that very soon, 40 vendors will gather for the purchase and sale of guns on our tax-payer supported school property.

A discussion has begun about whether or not it is appropriate to conduct gun sales on school district grounds. I began this conversation a few days ago when I emailed Superintendent Gene Schmidt and the five School Board members asking that LAPS discontinue its support of this Read More

By Dana Kline
Seventh Grade Language Arts

As a middle school teacher excited about the beautiful new building we will soon be moving into, I attended the special board meet last Friday, Aug. 23. The board made a thoughtful and careful decision about our move in date, Sept. 17. I especially want to thank the board, and our principal, Rex Kilburn, for giving us one extra day to move in, and collaborate with other teachers with whom we will be sharing classrooms.

More than that, however, as a Jew, I want to thank the board for acknowledging the date of our High Holiday, Yom Kippur, and that it coincides with Read More

Letter to the Editor: UNM-LA Has Huge Impact on Local Education

By Pete Sheehey
Los Alamos County Councilor

UNM-LA has a huge positive impact on local education, starting with many of our high school students; our 16-year-old has been learning robotics there. Local entrepreneur William Sellers has argued that Los Alamos does not need “our own little private university.”

But let’s look in detail at what UNM-LA actually does (losalamos.unm.edu, or ourcommunityourcollege.com). It doesn’t pretend to be a self-contained university. It offers classes to: young people, to help them get their education started conveniently Read More

Solo Traveler: Travel Apps

Solo Traveler: Travel Apps
Column by SHERRY HARDAGE

With all the wonderful devices available today, which ones do you take on a solo trip?

Last year, I purchased an iPad. I thought about an iPhone, but with my over-60 eyes I could never read that tiny screen. The iPad has a built-in GPS that works with Google Maps, a feature I didn’t discover until a recent trip to Silver City.

I found my destination on a map and then turned off the cellular connection. As I drove, a voice came from the iPad telling me where to turn. For a long trip to Europe, I wanted to have access to language translators, which I thought Read More

NMVFC News:

ALBUQUERQUE—The best way for states to foster a productive economy is to invest in a well-educated workforce, according to a new paper published by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI.)

Unfortunately, New Mexico ranks low in both educational attainment and in median wages.

The report, “A Well Educated Workforce is Key to State Prosperity,” shows that the states with the highest wages and most productive economies are the states with the best-educated workforces.

The report concludes that investment in education—which is a state’s primary economic development Read More
