At the Environmental Sustainability Board (ESB) meeting Thursday, Oct. 17, the three finalists for the Los Alamos Business Recycler of the Year were selected.

The ESB was presented with nine businesses that were nominated by the community. The nine businesses nominated were:

Sunset Hayrides 4-6 p.m. Posse Lodge Today

COUNTY News:

The community is invited to participate in two sunset hayrides today starting out at the Los Alamos Posse Lodge.

The Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Division coordinates the event, which is supported by the Los Alamos County Sherriff’s Posse Lodge, the Los Alamos Stable Owner’s Association, the Los Alamos Pony Club and the Los Alamos 4-H Club.

Los Alamos MainStreet hosts Trick or Treat on MainStreet 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 in downtown Los Alamos.

Last year more than 3,000 people attended the event. Local businesses and organizations will open their doors and set up tables along Central Avenue to hand out treats to the costumed trick-or-treaters.

UNM-LA to Show Gandhi in Composition Cinema Lecture Series Oct. 24

UNM-LA News:

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) will feature Gandhi, Oct. 24, as the fourth installment in the Composition Cinema I: A Film and Lecture Series, which will run through Nov. 14.

The host for Gandhi will be UNM-LA Adjunct Faculty member, Dora Akleksandrova, and the discussion will center around her course theme “free will.”

Gandhi is a biography about Mohandas Gandhi, the spiritual and political leader of the non-violent resistance movement (Satyagraha) in India against the United Kingdom’s rule during the 20th century.

Bronson is a 5-month-old pit mix. He is currently in foster care, and his foster mom can’t say enough good things about him.

From a recent email update about Bronson, his foster mom reported that with a low-key foster environment, he is really starting to come out of his shell. Bronson is still a bit dependent on other dogs for confidence, and would love to have a dog buddy in the house to help show him the ropes and give him a little more confidence. He also loves play-dates with other dogs.

Rumba Class Benefits High School Dance Club

BESC News:

Natalia Barkhudarova will be teaching a Rumba Dance Class 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

Barkhudarova will teach a dance sequence in Rumba, plus focus on some of the fine points of arm styling.

A donation of $10 per dancer is suggested. The money will be given to the Los Alamos High School Dance Club for transportation expenses.

Espanola Hospital Auxiliary Hosts Hollyberry Fair

The Presbyterian Espanola Hospital Auxiliary’s Hollyberry Fair is 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1 in the Hospital Lobby.

CELIA G. OLIVAS May 10, 1930–Oct. 14, 2013

Celia G. Olivas was born in Durango, Colo., and grew up in Henderson, Nev., where she graduated from Basic High School. Her first job was a secretary to a lawyer.

Celia met Ray Olivas in San Luis, Colo., and they married in 1951. They moved to Colorado Springs and lived there until Ray finished his service in the army. They then returned to Henderson and started a family, having three children Vicki, Rick, and Theresa. Shortly after Theresa was born the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The Fall Brush and Bulk Item Collection started Monday, Oct. 7. The Environmental Services Division has been receiving a high volume of calls concerning the collection and this piece is meant to address many of the questions and comments received, and provide an update on collection progress.

Teapots Can Be Found in High Places

A local Facebook group has come together to support the United Way Youth Team in their quest to collect 12 teapots for their High Tea on the Hill event. 

In less than 20 minutes, at least five people volunteered the use of their personal teapots for this event. This is a wonderful example of coming together for a cause in our community!

Los Alamos Resident to Become U.S. Citizen

Los Alamos resident Victoria Rygh of Honduras will be among the 68 New Mexico residents representing 29 countries who will become U.S. citizens today in Albuquerque

Rygh has lived in Los Alamos for five years and works at Los Alamos Medical Center.

U.S. Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico will deliver the keynote address for the naturalization ceremony.
