Finalists Selected for Los Alamos Business Recycler of the Year

COUNTY News:

At the Environmental Sustainability Board (ESB) meeting Thursday, Oct. 17, the three finalists for the Los Alamos Business Recycler of the Year were selected.

The ESB was presented with nine businesses that were nominated by the community. The nine businesses nominated were:

  • Chapel Apartments

  • CB FOX

  • Enterprise Computing Systems

  • Jemez House Thrift Store

  • Los Alamos Cooperative Market

  • Los Alamos Daily Post

  • Los Alamos Lock and Key

  • Los Alamos Monitor

  • The United Church Thrift Shop

“We had nine great businesses nominated for the business recycler of the year. It was a tough task for the Board to narrow it down to the top three,” ESB Vice-Chair Suzette Fox said. Staff provided some input based on their experience servicing the trash and recycling of the nominated businesses, which assisted each Board member in selecting their top three. Each of the seven ESB members selected their top three and these results were analyzed to determine the three businesses who received the most votes.

The three finalists for the 2013 Los Alamos Business Recycler of the year are:

  • CB FOX
  • Los Alamos Cooperative Market
  • Los Alamos Monitor

Now that three finalists have been identified Environmental Services Staff will contact these businesses to gather more information about their recycling programs. Then on Nov. 4, this information will be published on the Los Alamos County Environmental Services webpage and voting will officially open. Stories will also be published in the local media to educate the public about the three finalists. The community will be able to vote online from Nov. 4 to Nov. 22.

The public vote will be combined with a vote from the ESB and a separate vote from Environmental Services Staff to determine the 2013 Los Alamos Business Recycler of the Year. The public vote will hold the most weight in determining the winner at 50 percent and the ESB vote and staff vote will each account for 25 percent. The winner will be announced at the Los Alamos County Chamber of Commerce Golden Anniversary Celebration Saturday, Nov. 30.

The Environmental Services Division would like to recognize these business for the extraordinary work they are doing in the area of recycling. “The fact that they were identified by the public for their recycling effort says a lot about their programs,” said Environmental Services Management Analyst Tom Nagawiecki.

Nagawiecki went on to say, “The County would also like to thank all those businesses who participate in the recycling program. These nine businesses are just a small sampling of the businesses in town that are taking the extra effort to help conserve resources and divert materials from the landfill,”

Be on the lookout the first week of November for more information on the finalists and how to vote.
