Free Film Series Screens ‘Wadjda’

Review by KELLY DOLEJSI

Los Alamos

It’s no surprise that current-day Saudi Arabia looks oppressive when seen through a young girl’s eyes. More startling are the small ways that sweeping political change can begin.

An award-winner at film festivals around the world, “Wadjda” (2012, rated PG, subtitled), is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a wonderful choice for this month’s installment of Mesa Public Library’s Free Film Series, screening 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the upstairs meeting-room Read More

Obituary: Keith Edward Coennen Oct. 10, 2015

KEITH EDWARD COENNEN Oct. 10, 2015

On October 10, 2015, the Good Lord took Keith Edward Coennen away from the strife of this life into a much better place.

Keith had a rare passion for life and loved to travel far and wide – whether to Australia or Europe. Keith touched many people that he met. He had a keen sense of humor and his friends thought of him as a quiet, gentle soul. He found great happiness in the mountains of Colorado where he would snow board, ski, camp and hike.

He worked very hard to become a well respected Software Design Engineer. Keith is survived by his mother, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Just Say No To Reorg

By JIM REDMAN
Los Alamos

The Los Alamos County Council should reject the proposed re-organization that adds the position of “Deputy Public Works Director.”

Despite the recently voiced concerns of the County Council, link, I think that the Los Alamos citizens communicate one message very clearly – stop wasting taxpayer’s money. You would have thought that they would have heard this message after the outrage over the tagline debacle.

The departure of the head of the Community and Economic Development Department (CEDD) provides an opportunity to reassess, and hopefully Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Pedestrians Beware…

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

The nation’s 4th worst drivers are out in force today. While driving home for lunch today, I observed a hapless pedestrian almost get hit twice in one intersection.

This young man was approaching the intersection of 20th and Trinity (on the Ashley Pond side). Just as he was going to cross 20th, a lady in a red sedan cut in front of him in her zeal to beat any traffic (there was none).

After the red sedan lady zoomed in front of no traffic, the young man proceeded to cross the intersection only to have a middle aged man in a gray SUV hypotenuse through the intersection Read More

By JULIE SMITH
Los Alamos

“Los Alamos Retirement Community” sounds like a wide-reaching organization, but do you really know which residents are helped by the live-in facilities available in Los Alamos, and which are not helped, are not eligible, or fall into the “inbetweener” category? You may think you know, but this is my ongoing experience.

Los Alamos Retirement Community’s live-in care options are Aspen Ridge Assisted Living, and Sombrillo Rehab and Nursing Home. There are vast differences in the life-stages and/or financial abilities of folks who are eligible and able to live
