Letter To The Editor: ‘Learning Dishonesty By Example’

Most young people learn best by the example displayed by their parents, siblings, teachers and peers.
 
Recently the local school administration has been setting a bad example for the students demonstrating dishonesty and involving the student in that dishonesty. Let me explain:
 
In the state of New Mexico school funds are distributed by a process which depends on counting the number of students three times a school year. These are called the 40 day count, the 80 day count, and the 120 day count.

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos’ (UNM-LA) Adult Basic Education office is offering free New Mexico High School Equivalency (HSE) prep classes beginning Monday, Jan. 11 and running through Wednesday, May 4.

State Police: New Year’s Enforcement Activity

New Mexico State Police officers were busy this New Years holiday.

From 6 p.m. Thursday night until 6 a.m. Friday morning, officers were out in force to ensure the safety of the citizens of New Mexico, as well as those traveling to and from New Mexico.

Temporary Road and Area Closures Announced On Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest has issued a temporary closure order for many roads and areas on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District restricting the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), two-wheel and four-wheel motorized vehicles. Snowmobiles are not prohibited by the order.

The closures have been implemented to protect natural resources and infrastructure, including wildlife, watershed and roads, and to ensure public health and safety during extreme soil moisture and heavy snowfall periods.

Senator Pre-Files Bill To Create Brittany Alert To Protect Developmentally Disabled

SANTA FE  Sen. Jacob Candelaria, D-26-Bernalillo, pre-filed a bill to create the Brittany Alert. 
 
Similar to the Amber Alert, the Brittany Alert creates a notification system for law enforcement when an individual with severe physical, mental or developmental disabilities goes missing.

Representative Pre-Files Legislation To Keep DWI Felons Off The Road

SANTA FE  Rep. Jim Dines pre-filed legislation to allow judges to impose stricter penalties on DWI felons. 
 
The bill, HB 82, targets a gap in New Mexico’s Habitual Offender law by expanding the statute to include DWI felonies.
 
“Chronic drunk driving is a habitual offense, and it should be included in the current statute,” Dines said. “We need stiff penalties to send a message that this repeated and flagrant disregard for the law won’t be allowed.”
 
A DWI offense can be considered a felony after the fourth conviction.

Jemez Valley Animal Amigos is grateful to have been included in the Holiday Donations from the Angel Paw Trees in Los Alamos.
 
We received many fabulous items for our rescue pets, from dog beds to cat toys. Everything will be useful for our upcoming rescues.
 
In 2015, we assisted 100 rescue animals from the Jemez Valley area. All donations of products or money are used directly to rehabilitate the animals and make them ready for adoption into long term loving homes.
 
All efforts to help us and the animals are greatly appreciated.

I am going to relish in saying I told you so, but you see, our wonderful government has once again found a way to keep on taxing us instead of giving it back.
 
Yes HB33 will not raise our taxes but when that last tax increase was instituted it was promised to end and be no longer needed. But I want it back and actually need the money for improvements to my own house!
 
Doesn’t it seem strange that our govt. thinks our schools are not good enough for our children to learn in and that’s the excuse they use?

CALVIN CHARLES MAXWELL Nov. 27, 1928 – Dec. 26, 2015

Calvin Charles Maxwell passed away peacefully on December 26th, 2015, in Gresham, Oregon. He was born to Ellen Francis McKeown Maxwell and Charles Calvin Maxwell in Burlington, Iowa, on November 27, 1928.

Calvin went to work in his early teens to help his mother support the family after his father passed away at a very early age. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1948 and worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant.
