Temporary Road and Area Closures Announced On Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest has issued a temporary closure order for many roads and areas on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District restricting the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), two-wheel and four-wheel motorized vehicles. Snowmobiles are not prohibited by the order.

The closures have been implemented to protect natural resources and infrastructure, including wildlife, watershed and roads, and to ensure public health and safety during extreme soil moisture and heavy snowfall periods. 

The closure order is in effect until April 9, 2016, unless it is rescinded earlier.

The closure includes:

  • EV Long Campground;
  • El Porvenir Campground; and
  • Field Tract.
  • Forest Roads (FRs) within Santa Fe National Forest boundaries including FR 18 (Mineral Hill), FR 156 (Johnson Mesa), FR 263, FR 636, FR 637, FR 113, FR 114, FR 18JC (San Geronimo), FR 634 (San Ignacio), FR 86, FR 92, FR 123, FR 123A, FR 375 (Glorieta Baldy), FR 645 (Willow Creek), FR 646 (Davis-Willow), FR 555 to Jack’s Creek Campground, FR 305 (Panchuela), FR 121 (Winsor Creek), FR 122 (Holy Ghost), FR 83 (Barillas), FR 632 (Capulin) and FR 638 (Capulin).

Forest Service personnel will enforce the closure. Violations are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment of not more than six months, or both. 

Federal, state and local officers, members of an organized rescue team or firefighting force, snowmobilers, and any others authorized by permit are exempt from the closure order.
