A Functional But Limited Sheriff’s Office For Los Alamos

The County Council will consider the role of the Sheriff in Los Alamos in a Special Session at 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 26 at the Los Alamos Municipal Building.

The Council, not including myself, called an election last November to eliminate the office. After a contentious campaign, Los Alamos voted to keep an elected Sheriff. I believe a majority on Council now accepts that our citizens want a functional Sheriff’s Office. We need to agree on what the Sheriff’s functions will be.

The Overlook Collection Center looked immaculate this week. No paint cans, fluorescent bulbs or containers of chemicals littered the ground. The roll off metal bins were not overflowing with material. The Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division is working to ensure the collection center stays that way.

FOSTER CITY, Calif. ― Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Campus has been named the No. 2 best school for medical assisting, according to the data-driven rankings by RWM.org, a resource hub for students.

Medical assistants work various roles within the healthcare industry which majorly includes greeting the patients, arranging the appointment, noting the vital signs, sending the samples to labs, recording medical data and even in some cases in medical billing.

SANTA FE ― The public is invited to comment on the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s new 2018 – 2023 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

The program will serve as a four year plan for the state’s federal aid highway program and will be implemented Oct. 1.

The STIP contains proposed road and bridge projects and is required under the federal legislation. Projects on the list are on federal and state highways (roads with I, U.S. or NM designations).

ALBUQUERQUE ― Families facing Alzheimer’s disease will have access to a free, seven-week education course in Los Alamos offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter.

The “Savvy Caregiver Program,” course is each Saturday from Aug. 19 through Oct. 7 (except on Labor Day weekend) at the Betty Ehart Senior Center in Los Alamos. Each class is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The course is free and open to all.
