Small Earthquake Felt In Los Alamos

Staff Report

Seismometers at Los Alamos National Laboratory recorded a small earthquake at around 10:23 a.m. today in the Los Alamos area, according to seismologist Peter Roberts. No information on the magnitude or the intensity of the quake will be available for two to three hours, Roberts said.

Roberts and his colleagues are gathering “felt reports” and have asked the community to email them describing what they felt as well as what time and at what street address they felt the activity. Emails may be sent to rekelley@lanl.gov or proberts@lanl.gov.

ALBUQUERQUE  July 21, Attorney General Hector Balderas, Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales, Homeland Security Investigations and the Albuquerque Police Department announced the successful result of a joint operation targeting commercial sex trafficking of minors in Albuquerque.
 
Seven men were arrested this week in Albuquerque during the operation for soliciting sex with someone they believed to be a 15-year-old girl, who was actually an undercover BCSO deputy. The men all attempted to pay $40 to $200 to have sex with 15-year-old girls.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Cleanup Means More Jobs, Healthier Local Environment

The effort to cleanup more than 70 years of Los Alamos National Laboratories nuclear legacy waste is no small undertaking. Through that process, the Department of Energy (DOE) estimates Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will be fully remediated by year 2035. With a new Environmental Management contractor soon taking the reins, they will be embarking upon the hopeful beginning of the end of ‘legacy waste’ cleanup at LANL.

Ashley Pond Concrete Replacement Begins Monday

COUNTY News:

Beginning Monday, July 31, crews will be replacing sections of cracked concrete sidewalk just west of the Ashley Pond Pavilion near the pond.

This warranty repair work is being performed at no additional cost to the County. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to be complete by Wednesday, Aug. 2.

Pedestrian access across this section of walkway will be limited for the duration. The public is advised to use caution when in the area and to stay alert for construction equipment and advisory signing.

Mark Purtill Faces Pretrial Hearing On Battery Charge

Mark S. Purtill, 62, of Los Alamos is facing a pretrial hearing Aug. 24 before Los Alamos Magistrate Judge Pat Casados on charges of battery against a household member and interference with communications. Purtill was arrested following a June 20 domestic disturbance at a 46th Street address.
