Bandelier National Monument will be celebrating the Year of the Bird in October with Global Big Day #2 Oct. 6.
Meet at the Visitor Center at 8 a.m. for a bird walk down the Falls Trail to kick off this important bird day. Please wear comfortable shoes/boots and bring water and binoculars if you have them. Contact the Bandelier Visitor Center for more information at 505.672.3861 ext 517.
Global Big Day is an international birding event to collect data on migrating birds. These counts are very important for scientists to track movements of birds throughout migration and through global changes in habitat. All you need to do to participate is sign up for an eBird account at, watch the birds in your yard or neighborhood, and enter them into the website or app. Birds will be updated in real-time so you will be able to see birds from all over the world being logged all day long.

The bird of the month for October is the Great-Horned Owl. This bird can be seen in Bandelier year-round and has one of the most recognizable owl hoots. Owls have large eyes with pupils that open widely when it is dark. Their eyes cannot move, but their heads can turn over 180 degrees. Keep an eye on the Bandelier Facebook page for more interesting facts about these owls!
