New Mexico’s Health Professional Loan Repayment Program Expands To Address Doctor Shortage

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday announced a major expansion of New Mexico’s Health Professional Loan Repayment Program, the latest in a series of administration actions to address a physician shortage that has left 32 of the state’s 33 counties with critical gaps in care. 

Under the expanded Health Professional Loan Repayment Program, licensed physicians — including part-time physicians — will receive $75,000 per year for student debt relief over a four-year service commitment, for a total of up to $300,000. That makes New Mexico’s program the Read More

SANTA FE — The 2026 New Mexico Great Reads book selection honors two books rooted in fire watch life: “The Burning Season” by Caroline Starr Rose and “The Mountain Knows the Mountain: A Fire Watch Diary” by Philip Connors.

The books were selected by the New Mexico Center for the Book at the New Mexico State Library (NMSL) to represent the state’s literary landscape at the National Book Festival, an event showcasing the importance of books and reading. SANTA FE — New Mexico achieved one of the largest year-over-year FAFSA completion increases in the country this year, joining just three other states to hit a 20% gain as national completion rates reached an all-time high.

The Family YMCA Los Alamos Teen Center is inviting community members to help support local teens during the upcoming End of Semester De-Stress Week by bringing friendly pets to visit the Teen Center from 1–5 p.m., this Wednesday and Thursday.

State Road 112 At El Vado Dam Closed May 27–Sept. 4, 2026

NMDOT News:

The closure prevents all public access across the dam, requiring travelers to use alternative routes, 24 hours a day throughout the closure period.

Rural Students In Rio Arriba County Get Access To Broadband Internet

More than 170 rural students in the Española Public Schools now have access to high-speed internet following the completion of a state-funded broadband project in Rio Arriba County.

HOWARD LEE GURLEY May 14, 2026

Howard Lee Gurley passed away peacefully from heart disease on May 14, 2026, in Harlingen, Texas, with his mother and father by his side. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1967 and grew up in both Albuquerque and Los Alamos.

Lee was a creative and artistic person. After high school, he attended the Colorado Institute of Art and began his career as a graphic artist in New York City, where he lived and worked for over 20 years. He later returned to New Mexico and eventually moved to Texas to help care for his mother.
