Jemez Historic Site To Host Trio Of Happenings In June

NMDCA News:

From star gazing to rock painting to digging into gardening, the community is invited to make these programs part of the early summer plans at Jemez Historic Site.

Get the summer off to a hot start in the cool mountain air at Jemez Historic Site and learn some new skills. All programs are included with admission of $7 for adults and free to children 16 years and younger, Tribal members, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, MNMF members, and Friends of the Coronado Historic site members.

Jemez Historic Site has a trio of happenings this month:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 20 — Looking to the Skies: Ancient and Modern Astronomers. Learn about past and modern perspectives of astronomy from an Indigenous point of view. We’ll have a special presentation to discuss how Southwestern Indigenous people observed and believed about the world above them and how the worlds above and around them are connected and related. We’ll use special sun viewing telescopes to take a closer look at the sun and making a special craft activity in honor of Father’s Day.
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2026 — Painting Rock Imagery: Join Ranger Brenda for a rock imagery painting program. Explore the outside interpretive trail and site structures, then come inside and paint plants, animals, and other designs inspired by your exploration of the site. This is a fun, all-ages activity. Paint supplies are provided.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, June 28, 2026 — Gardens at Gisewa: Cooking, Eating, and Growing Together: Join us to talk about gardening and farming, and how food nourishes and brings us together. Ranger Casey will lead a brief presentation and serve a light meal of corn, beans, and squash. The program will include a tour of the site’s garden beds. Visitors will be able to help staff plant and will receive starter plants to take back home.
