New Mexico Dist. 5 Sen. Leo Jaramillo, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval & Santa Fe counties, who serves as the West Region Chair of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL), is representing New Mexico and the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators as part of an international delegation leadership exchange.
The Programa de Líderes Hispanos is an international leadership and diplomacy exchange hosted by Fundación Consejo España–EE.UU, that brings together Hispanic state legislators from across the United States to strengthen relationships between Spain and the U.S.
During this weeklong program in Madrid and Cádiz, participants are meeting with senior Spanish government officials, including leaders from Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, migration leadership, the U.S. Embassy, and major energy and infrastructure companies such as Iberdrola.
“This trip is about building bridges between cultures, governments, and people.” Sen. Jaramillo said. “I’m honored to represent New Mexico and Hispanic leaders from across the country while sharing our values, our history, and our vision for stronger international partnerships rooted in dignity, opportunity, and respect.”
The delegation is engaging in discussions on migration, international partnerships, energy innovation, national security, culture, and economic development while exploring the deep historical and cultural ties between Spain and Hispanic communities in the United States.
“I have had the pleasure of meeting with Diego Martínez Belío, Spain’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, and Pilar Cancela Rodríguez, Spain’s Secretary of State for Migration, to discuss migration, international partnerships, and the importance of dignity and humanity for families impacted by immigration policies,” Sen. Jaramillo said. “As a proud 12th-generation New Mexican, it was an honor to represent our people and culture on the international stage.”
