Jazz Night came back to the Blue Window Bistro Saturday night when a full house enjoyed the Tom Rheam Trio from Santa Fe.

The Blue Window is a great place to hear jazz. The lights are low, the space is intimate and the conversations are muted during the music.

In addition, the food is great. There’s even room to dance. There is always a special menu for Jazz Night. This time it included “The Captain’s Plate.” Two lobster tails, scallops, and shrimp served with gourmet mac and cheese—bliss. Read More

It’s a cold winter night in Los Alamos, but at the Family YMCA, our very own roller derby team is generating plenty of heat as they spin around the gym at top speed.

The Los Alamos Derby Dames is a flat track roller derby league founded in April 2011. The league currently has one team, the M’Atom Bombs.

With some help from the 2009 movie “Whip It” roller derby, which is dominated by all-female amateur teams, has grown in popularity in recent years.

Poetry Reading Primer for Tonight’s Authors Speak Event

If you have never been to a poetry reading, this month’s Authors Speak event is a great way to get your feet wet.

Jon Davis, Santa Fe’s newest poet laureate, reads at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 24, at Mesa Public Library. Davis’ poetry appeals to the mind and the heart in a language that you will understand.

1 pound of pork tenderloin, sliced on a diagonal
2 eggs, beaten  2 cup bread crumbs
2/3 cup oil
4 strips of bacon (diced)
1/2 onion -chopped fine
1/2 carrot- chopped fine
2/3 cup pearl onions
1 teaspoon worcestshire sauce
12-16 oz of fresh mushrooms ( i use a mix of what I can find), sliced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
3/4 cup dry red wine
1 tablespoon veal stock concentrate(can get it from whole foods)
1 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 bay leaf

Boys and Girls Invited to Participate in Annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition

Boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The local competition will be held 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 from at Los Alamos High School’s Griffith Gymnasium.

The next Jazz Night at the Blue Window is set for 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Blue Window Bistro, 813 Central Ave.

The restaurant will welcomes back the Tom Rheam Trio featuring Tom Rheam on piano and trumpet, Dick Hogle on drums and vocals and David Moir on bass.

Rheam has played on the road with Ray Charles, played backup to Frank Sinatra on recordings, toured with the Glenn Miller Band and many other well-known professional singers and musicians.

This week’s recipe:
 
Coconut Bonbons
 
  • 2 2/3 cups(7oz) flaked coconut
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds, finally chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temp
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 20 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
 
 
Mix first 6 ingredients, chill 3 hours.
 
 
Roll into small balls (maybe 3/4 inch) and chill well again.
 
 
Melt chocolate and dip balls into chocolate and chill again
