Letter To The Editor: David Hampton For UNM-LA Advisory Board

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

We have some good candidates running for the UNM-LA Advisory Board, and top among them is David Hampton.

David Hampton is committed to community service. He has served on multiple Boards. Those that I remember without googling include the P&Z, County Transportation, Arts Council, Parks and Rec, the Coop—and most importantly for this endorsement, the UNM-LA Advisory Board.

David attends County Council meetings (in person…for the whole meeting) and knows the County leadership, which, of course, is critical for collaboration in any County position. Through Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Response To Director Thom Mason

By STEPHANIE NAKHLEH
Los Alamos

Director Thom Mason’s recent letter on the proposed gross receipts tax increase demonstrates that LANL is willing to weigh in publicly on county policy matters that affect the Laboratory. I appreciate that willingness to engage. Now I’d like to see that same level of public leadership applied to issues that are much more mission-critical for LANL and important to the town’s vitality: housing policy and road safety.

Los Alamos faces a housing crisis that directly affects workforce retention. LANL has grown from 11,743 employees in 2017 to approximately 18,000 Read More

By MEGHAN ROMERO
Los Alamos

I am proud to endorse Tammy Hinckley for the District 2 Los Alamos Public Schools board position. Tammy Hinckley was my sixth grade teacher, and I remember her as a fair, caring woman who worked hard to create a safe environment for her students. She treated her students with respect.

I recently ran into Mrs. Hinckley after more than 10 years, and not only did she remember me, but she remembered my hopes and dreams. I am proud to have a candidate who cares and remembers her students, because she will carry those qualities with her into office to make changes for the betterment Read More

Letter To Editor: Does Los Alamos Need A Bike Park?

By Rich Judy
Los Alamos

Why a Bike Park? The estimated cost ($500,000 to $800,000) of the “Bike Park” is an excessive expense. In light of the current political and budgetary environment (“shut-down”, current furloughs, and terminations), Los Alamos should be squirreling money away for an unknown future.

There seems to be this innate proclivity within Los Alamos to spend budgetary resources on little legacy edifices that require; regular maintenance and additional insurance concerns.

Why a Bike Park? According to the article, Los Alamos is already known for mountain biking, which is gloriously Read More

Letter To The Editor: St. Louis? That’s News to Me!

By TAMARA ‘TAMMY’ HINCKLEY
White Rock

Let me start by stating emphatically, I AM NOT MOVING TO ST. LOUIS! Sorry about the caps. I am not yelling at you. I just want to clarify the rumors about me.

Today, I was asked by a friend if I am planning to move to St. Louis. This is news to me. I asked my husband of 39 years if he has plans to move to St. Louis? He said, “NO!” Okay, he answered in a more questioning voice and wondered why I would ask such a ridiculous question.

Regardless, the word around town (maybe just White Rock) is that I am moving to St. Louis. I am not sure how to address this lie. I am completely dumbfounded Read More
