Los Alamos Arts Council presents the Rio Grande Guitar Quartet at 7 pm., April 26 at Fuller Lodge. The cost is $15 ($10 for LAAC members) and includes light refreshments.

The Rio Grande Guitar Quartet, made up of premiere New Mexico classical guitarists Mickey Jones, Jeremy Mayne, Lynn McGrath and Ben Silva, is an exciting ensemble whose eclectic repertoire spans centuries and genres, including new compositions and new transcriptions.

PEEC offers New Survival Skills Class for Kids

This summer, the Pajarito Environmental Education Center will offer a primitive skills class in the Jemez for children entering grades 4-7. 

 
The class will meet on Saturdays (and two Sundays) in June and July from 1:30-3:30 p.m., and will be held at various locations in the Jemez area. 
 
Experienced educator Rourke McDermott will teach the class. 
 
The cost is $60 or $48 for PEEC members or a second sibling for the whole summer.

Cleanup at Los Alamos Middle School Garden Site

The Los Alamos Youth Food Project’s [LAYFP] key goal is to develop a community garden adjacent to the Los Alamos Middle School near the new Solar Array and KRSN AM 1490 antenna.

The garden will be available to K-12 LA Public School students, to community organizations and to individuals.

Griffith Gymnasium Ribbon Cutting and Rededication is 6 p.m. Monday

The community is invited to the Ribbon Cutting/Rededication of Griffith Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Monday, April 23.

Griffith Gym is named after 1st Lt. Thurston “Turk” Griffith, Jr., a 1958 graduate of Los Alamos High School.

“Turk” was awarded posthumously by General William Westmoreland the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

In December of 1964 “Turk” was assigned to the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam.

He served as an adviser to units of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in Binh Tuy Province.

Dr. Ann Wadstrom Died Sunday

Longtime Los Alamos resident Dr. Ann Wadstrom has died.

Wadstrom was 80 years old.

She encountered complications from a recent surgery.

Wadstrom was the president of the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women and region director of the New Mexico Federation of Republican Women.

She has been an active member of the United Church and participated on several civic and community committees over the years.

Lymphoma Seminar Set for Thursday

The Los Alamos Council on Cancer will be presenting a free community program on Lymphoma, Thursday, April 19.

Dr. Eric Bernstein, oncologist with the Northern New Mexico Cancer Care at Los Alamos Medical Center will be providing information on the historical significance of lymphoma, the differences between Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the relationship between radiation and lymphoma, the four stages of lymphoma and treating lymphomas with chemotherapy and radiation.

Superintendent to Address Policy and Curriculum Concerning Harassment in Schools at AAUW Meeting

The Los Alamos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr., to hear about Los Alamos Public Schools policy and curriculum concerning harassment in schools.

Superintendent Dr. Gene Schmidt of the Los Alamos Public Schools will speak about the current school district policy on bullying and sexual harassment.

Schmidt has a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Washington State University and more than 30 year’s experience in the field of education, including 12 years in the classroom.  Read More

Rotary Meets Tuesday at Fuller Lodge

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos will meet at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Nambe Room upstairs at Fuller Lodge.

Donnie Torres and Richard Matteson will talk about the latest developments at the Los Alamos Golf Course.
