U.S. Army Col. Bob Loy (Ret.) Shares Experience With Operation Tomodachi
U.S. Army Col. Bob Loy (now retired) was the guest speaker at the June 4 Rotary Club lunch meeting at the Dixie Girl Restaurant in downtown Los Alamos. Loy was a liaison officer working at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo when the devastating tsunami of 2011 struck Japan’s shores. During his talk, Loy shared his experiences leading the evacuation in Operation Tomodachi. Loy is married to Rotarian Laura Loy and is the son in law of Rotarians Anne and Hal Davis. Join Bandelier staff and the Los Alamos Mountaineers for the second annual Introduction to Backpacking course.
This three part course will be offered Tuesday June 18, Thursday June 27, and Saturday and Sunday July 20 and 21. We encourage anyone who wants to experience Bandelier’s backcountry beyond day hikes to attend. Both beginner backpackers and those with experience are welcome to participate in this exciting event.

Romero Records Twofold First Place in Weekly Pace Race

Ted Romero was the top predictor as well as the fastest finisher in the three mile race in the weekly pace race Tuesday in hot, dusty conditions with a bit of smoke from the fires in the area on the sewage treatment plant access road in lower Bayo Canyon.

Edward Fredric Hammel, 95, a Los Alamos resident for 69 years, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at home in Los Alamos.
He was born in New York City, New York on Jan. 6, 1918. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY. His father, Edward F. Hammel, Sr. was a civil engineer. His mother, Louise Schultz Hammel, was a church secretary, loving housewife and mother.
Edward Hammel graduated from Dartmouth College in 1939 with a major in chemistry. It was at Dartmouth where he also worked as a waiter in Mrs. Rood’s Eating Club, the only one that served women living in Hanover. Read More

Thompson Ridge Fire
The Thompson Ridge Fire is now 75 percent contained. The fire started May 31, 2013.
It is burning on the Valles Caldera National Preserve about two miles northeast of La Cueva.
The fire is in steep rugged terrain and is burning mixed conifer and ponderosa pine. The Arizona Central West Zone Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Bea Day, assumed management responsibility for the fire Sunday June 2, 2013.

A tasty breakfast prepared by Daniel’s Cafe was served to community volunteers being honored at the 2012 Vecinos Volunteers Event hosted Wednesday by Los Alamos Natinal Laboratory at Fuller Lodge. Current and retired Laboratory employees submitted their volunteer hours worked at a charitable organization.
