The Los Alamos Heart Council Health Fair began in 1985 as an idea at a Heart Council meeting proposed by Dr. Carolyn Linnebur and Mahavir Jain.

National Weather Service: The Rio Grande basin, from northern New Mexico to Brownsville remains the focus of concern for potential flooding this week due to three distinct events ongoing in the region:
- The ongoing rainfall over New Mexico;
- Heavy rainfall leading to reservoir releases in the Rio Conchos basin in northern Mexico; and
- Potential impacts from Hurricane Ingrid in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

It turns out that people lose their empathy once they assume a position of power. (Who’d thought?!) This isn’t just based on hunch, or some social/psychological research findings. Three local athletes recently competed at the National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio.
Susan Krohn and Jackie Marr participated in the swimming events for women in the 70-74 age division and Inez Ross in the 5K Road Race for women in the 80-84 age division.

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The Valles Caldera Trust board of trustees has rescheduled its meeting in public to Sept. 26 at the Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder in Pojoaque instead of the originally planned Sept. 19 date in Espanola.
The meeting is pushed back a week to accommodate the return of Dr. Melissa Savage and Dr. C. Kenneth Smith to the board of trustees. Students Organize Suicide Awareness Activities

Two high school students have planned a week of activities on suicide prevention next week at Los Alamos High School.
Faith Glasco and Elizabeth Hjelvik have put together a list of activities.
“After the events of last school year, I decided it was time someone did something to try preventing this tragedy,” Hjelvik said. “I did a lot of research on suicide and discovered that it is 100 percent preventable if the person is reached out to and having this week’s activities will show people that people do care about them.”

Naval JROTC Holds Nut Sale Fundraiser
JROTC News:
The Los Alamos Naval JROTC unit is raising funds through a nut sale with the Virginia Diner Company.
The sale is the biggest fundraiser the students do and will fund travel and team costs throughout the year.
