EDWIN D. “BUCK” BUCKINGHAM June 16, 1918 – Feb. 17, 2015

Edwin D. “Buck” Buckingham was from Shiloh, TN, born at home in Possum Hollow on Sunday, June 16, 1918. He lived most of his life in Colorado, and died in Los Alamos on February 17, 2015, after a short illness. He was four months shy of his 97th birthday.

Two years earlier he moved into assisted living in Los Alamos, to be near his only child, Judy Buckingham, and her husband, Bob Williams. This was a courageous move – he had been the same house for over 60 years!

Los Alamos County has hired a new emergency manager. Beverley Simpson took over the post Tuesday, replacing Philmont Taylor who retired in 2014.

Gerald Antos (letter) has an interesting take on the recent electric rate increase, i.e., blaming Council for the increase.

Does he recognize that under the current Article V of the Charter that the Board of Public Utilities proposes electric rates to Council, and that Council can only approve or remand those rates back to the BPU for further consideration?

Had the proposed revisions to Article V passed, then Council actually might have the power to deal with utility rates.  As it is now, they have very little control over rates.

FBI: Person Of Interest Sought In Death Of Acoma Pueblo Woman

The FBI is seeking a person of interest who may have information regarding the death of a woman whose body was found on Acoma Pueblo in November 2014.

Nathan Chavez, 32, is 5’8” tall, weighs approximately 165 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen Nov. 23, 2014, in the Laguna Pueblo area attempting to hitch a ride to Albuquerque.

Chavez is known to frequent Albuquerque homeless shelters around the area of Central Avenue and Wyoming Boulevard. He also is known to stay around the area of Central Avenue and Yale Boulevard, near the University of New Mexico. Read More

Board Of Public Utilities Selects Future Energy Resources Committee Members

In accordance with an adopted motion last January to form a Future Energy Resources (FER) Ad Hoc Citizen Committee, the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) appointed four individuals to serve on the seven member committee.  

From a pool of 15 applications, the following individuals were appointed at last night’s Board meeting to serve on the FER Committee:

Pile Burning Continues This Weekend

LAFD News:

Pile burning will continue this weekend on Los Alamos County lands. 

Smoke from the pile burns will be monitored to ensure that the New Mexico Environment Department’s Air Quality Bureau regulations are being met. Smoke will likely be visible from Espanola, Santa Clara and Santa Fe and from N.M. 502 and N.M. 285.

Bill Reducing Workers’ Comp When Employee Is Drunk Or High On Job Passes House In Bi-Partisan Vote

SANTA FE – Legislation that would significantly reduce workers’ compensation in cases when the employee’s death or injury is the result of being drunk or high on the job passed the House floor by a bi-partisan 64-2.

“Being high or drunk on the job is reckless and puts lives at risk,” said Republican Rep. Dennis Roch, who is sponsoring the bill. “Passing this legislation protects our workers and holds violators accountable for their actions.”
