LANL’s Picture Of The Week: Cyber Image Of Cosmos
This intricate orange web is actually a high-resolution cyber image of our cosmos. The region pictured here represents about 1/10,000 of the total simulation volume. A team of astrophysicists and computer scientists, including LANL researchers, completed the first-ever complete trillion-particle cosmological simulation and have made an initial 55 Tbyte (trillion bytes) public data release. A primary goal of this project is to adopt some of the fundamental concepts of the open source community, and translate them to open data for state-of-the-art cosmological simulations. SFI Seminar: Darwinian Neurodynamics
Harold de VladarThe Santa Fe Institute presents a seminar on Darwinian Neurodynamics by Harold de Vladar at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday in the Collins Conference Room in Santa Fe.
Abstract: Theoretical models of neuronal function consider different mechanisms through which networks learn, classify and discern inputs. A central focus of these models is to understand how associations are established amongst neurons, in order to predict spiking patterns that are compatible with empirical observations.
Although these models have led to major insights and

Yang: When Science Meets Reality – Part I
By ELENA YANGWhen Science Meets Reality – Part I
“I just want to be left alone to do my work.” A pervasive sentiment at workplace, I am sure; what I am not sure is if it’s more so these days than, say, 20 years ago.
Since I have been closely affiliated with scientists of one kind or another for the majority of my life, I constantly hear from them uttering that expression, with exasperation and passion. However, I am afraid that unless a scientist is independently wealthy or capable of attracting a wealthy patron, thereby having at his disposal all the equipment and resources that money Read More

Pastor Granillo: He Is Risen Indeed!
By Pastor RAUL GRANILLOHe Is Risen Indeed!
I love watching movies, especially ones that chronicle the transformation of a character. I do not just like the kind where you initially dislike a character but at the movie’s conclusion they suddenly do something that redeems their moral character. Those are fine but they are so predictable that they are cliché.
No, I really look forward to the movie that does a great job of getting the audience to really dislike a character and then, through revelation of their life and their experiences, you find that your dislike has transformed into empathy. Read More
