How the Hen House TurnsAfter Peeper hatched, mother hen Peeky’s protective skirt of feathers was always ready to protect her chick when he ran from danger, whether real, like crows, or imaginary, like me. But when he flew up to the edge of the cut-off milk jug we used as a water trough—and fell in—Peeky let out such a wild squawking we raced down to the pen in seconds, adrenalin pumping.
We lifted Peeper’s struggling, bedraggled wet body from the water to save him from a drowning his mother clearly recognized but couldn’t prevent. With barely a Read More
Letter To The Editor: Waiting For Leasure Pool My Brown Beard Is White And Toddlers Are In College
By DAVID CARROLLWhen discussion began on construction of a leisure pool at the Walkup Aquatic Center (WAC), my two daughters were toddlers and my beard was dark-brown. The kids are now in graduate school and a senior in college and my beard is white.
As a facility that from the beginning catered to athletes and competitive swimmers, the WAC has never served the entire Los Alamos community as intended. We used the WAC many times, but in was never appropriate for children/families. The water was too cold, too deep with adults and competitive swimmers the obvious focus.
We made do with the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Ban Bag Bans
If a plastic bag ban goes into effect here in Los Alamos County, rather than pay a .10 fee for paper, I’ll just purchase my own plastic bags at Sam’s Club. At $12.98 per thousand it would be cheaper.
Maybe I’ll just get my groceries there while I’m at it.
In the meantime, I’m going to start double bagging to stock up my own supply.
Ban away, we’ll just work around it.
Pastor Granillo: The Cross
By Pastor RAUL GRANILLOThe Cross
One might argue that the universal symbol for Christianity is the cross. When we see one on a building we might think it’s a church, when we see someone wearing a cross on a necklace we might think it represents their faith, and when we see one on the side of a highway we might think that it somehow brings comfort in a time of loss.
The cross is likely to be the universal symbol for Christianity and yet there are so many who are offended by its presence.
The removal of Christian symbols such as the cross (like the one created in the rubble of Ground Zero), or a monument Read More

Smart Design With SuzetteHave you heard of Biophilic Design? The term “biophilia” literally means “love of life or living systems.” That sounds good, right?
Not to be confused with a specific “natural” or “organic” aesthetic, biophilic design is a design method with proven benefits for human performance and well-being.

Letter To The Editor: Bags – To Choose Or Not…
By RICHARD HANNEMANNLet’s see: we have cloth bags, we have plastic bags, we have paper bags, and we have boxes (Costco has always sent customers home with boxes that originally had the products shipped to Costco).
That’s four choices. And people do choose: some use paper (arts and crafts projects), some use boxes (storage, etc), some use plastic (garbage and animal waste disposal, storage), some use cloth (particularly when you have enough paper, plastic and boxes to meet those needs), some use combinations of all of the above.
People are
