Yang: Some Intangibles Lead To Solid Successes
By ELENA YANGIn the previous column, I related a story of how a Google’s team leader’s revelation of his terminal cancer opened up a doorway for his teammates to share their respective vulnerabilities. This ultimately made the team more cohesive than it might have been otherwise. The risk of stepping out of one’s comfort zone is a crucial part of quality leadership – the risk lies in the uncertainty whether one’s opening up would be reciprocated or dismissed as weakness – and is one of the key elements of building trust.
But what is “trust?” It’s one of those soft features that is Read More

In bygone days, pictures on a wall were often updated by adding a picture in front of an existing one, making it easy to revert to a previous scene or, in some cases, hide a picture for posterity. Often, the picture frame

Letter To The Editor: Grateful For School Board Action
By DIANA MARTINEZ As a Los Alamos resident and an employee of a charitable organization, I am humbled and grateful for the courageous and creative actions of the Los Alamos School Board in regard to setting user rates for school facilities for this next year.
Overall, the Board weighed the need to ensure the facilities were monitored, secure and accessible when lent to community organizations, and was considering new paid monitor fees vs. the current volunteer monitor scenario that frequently left gaps in safety and accessibility.

An Open Book: To Those Who Help Us Speak
By DAVID IZRAELEVITZOne of my clearest memories of high school was watching Mr. Cipolla, a vigorous young social studies teacher, pacing back and forth across the blackboard in his tight pants popular in the 70s, the top of his shirt opened to reveal impressive amounts of chest hair. He would wave the chalk in his hand and prompt us to think deeper about the historical period we were learning that day or even current events. “Pay attention guys,” he scolded us during the Watergate era. “This stuff will be in the history books!”
He was colorful and loud and spirited, even outrageous at times, Read More
McQuiston: What To Do (And Not Do) After An Accident
By ALLEN MCQUISTONIf you’ve ever been in an accident, you may recall scrambling to try to figure out what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. A vehicle accident is never a pleasant experience for anyone involved. Nevertheless, as you make the first report of a claim, you can alleviate some of the confusion that can often surface after an accident by keeping a few tips in mind.
Do not, under any circumstance, sign any document at the scene unless it is for the police or other such authority.
Make notes about the accident, including all names of parties involved and witnesses. Read More

Contractor on a ladder. Courtesy photo
By SUZETTE FOXYes, this is the busy season for renovations. Have patience. As an interior designer, I can’t get contractors to call me back either. So, don’t take it personally.
Clients get extremely frustrated and often ask if they have done something wrong in searching for a contractor. I understand the frustration. But believe me when I say that skilled contractors are in high demand. Good contractors are very, very busy.
This means when you do start phoning contractors, don’t be surprised that they don’t immediately answer their phones — Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pokémon Go Phenomenon In Los Alamos
By DYLAN ZANOWThere’s a new phenomenon that’s really big in Los Alamos now — it’s a mobile game called “Pokémon Go”. It has already surpassed Tinder and is soon to overtake Twitter as the most actively-used Android & iOS app. It’s an “augmented reality game” wherein players’ physical locations are tracked via GPS as they travel around the town looking for imaginary creatures called Pokémon, which “spawn” for all players simultaneously at different

The graph above shows the number of police deaths per one million population.
I note the dramatic fall-off in police deaths after the end of Prohibition. It is entirely possibly that we might experience a similar (relative) drop-off in police deaths if the War on Drugs was abandoned, as Columbia Professor Read More
