Letter To The Editor: Black Bear Safety … The Bear Facts
By KHALIL J. SPENCERFr. Glenn Jones wishes that “…someone catches and transports these bears hanging around town…” (letter). I sympathize with Fr. Jones in looking after the safety of his flock. The problem is that Los Alamos is a rural, mountainous town and is naturally black bear habitat. Removing a bear or three will not remove the fact that we share our county with wildlife, bears and other large animals included.
Thankfully, black bears are rarely aggressive towards humans. The recent attack in the mountains resulted from Read More

NEA-NM President On PARCC Student Test Results
By BETTY PATTERSON
President NEA-New Mexico
The Public Education Department’s release of Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) scores is a positive sign. However, the continued use of these scores for high stakes decisions is still just as misguided as it ever was. Movement in the right direction is an indication that New Mexico’s educators and students are working hard.
Students are at the heart of all we do at NEA-New Mexico, so we appreciate the 30,000 foot view of New Mexico’s education system which the PARCC does provide. The PARCC does not pinpoint Read More

Letter To The Editor: Exasperation Has Its Limits–I’m Taking Out Futures In Clothespins

Los Alamos
The unsigned letter from the Los Alamos GOP and Dr. Reilly’s letter about Hillary Clinton are not up to the standards I expect in this community. Just a few comments.
Under the U.S. Supreme Court case Communications Workers of America v. Beck (1988) non-union members in a union shop do not have to pay for union political activity but only that part of the dues that go to representation with the employer. Union members vote on what political activity their union will become involved with through their own representatives Read More

Letter to the Editor: Bowman Response To Kosiewicz
By Charles D. BowmanKosiewicz, apparently from his letter, a key leader in establishing the design basis for WIPP, says he retired from LANL 11 years ago. It would have served readers well if he had not relied on memory before commenting on our analysis of the barrel incident and our “errors and omissions.”
Among his misstatements:
- He writes, “In our experiments, the major gases produced from radiolysis of cellulosics were carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide with lesser amounts of hydrogen.” However Fig. 10 of Zerwechk’s 1979 LANL
