New Mexico COVID-19 Cases Now At 25,042 With 3 More Deaths And 12,679 Patients Recovered

STATE News:

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials have announced this afternoon 126 additional positive tests for COVID-19.

Los Alamos County reports 2 new cases, which brings the total to 27 cases that have tested positive for COVID-19.

Today’s update announces 3 additional deaths reported in New Mexico related to COVID-19.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported today the most recent cases:

  • 22 new cases in Bernalillo County
  • 16 new cases in Chaves County
  • 5 new cases in Curry County
  • 22 new cases in Doña Ana County
  • 10 new cases in Eddy County
  • 1 new case in Grant County
  • 14 new cases in Lea

Laura Johnson McFarland died August 7, 2020 in Pima County, Arizona.

Laura was born Laura Alice Johnson in Hartford City, Indiana, on October 27, 1934. She grew up in Hartford City and graduated from Hartford City High School as class Valedictorian in 1952. She went to Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio on scholarship.

After graduating from college, Laura took a position with AT&T in Cincinnati. In Cincinnati she met Robert (“Mac”) McFarland and they were married in May 1957 in Hartford City.

The Los Alamos School Board has unanimously chosen Melanie Colgan to fill the District 4 seat vacated by Julia Baker.

Baker recused herself from the vote. She is moving to Spokane, Wash. to be closer to her family.

Members of the board praised the other candidate, Bethany Scott as well.

“I wish we could choose both of them,” Board Member Christine Bernstein said.

Oversized Load Moving On NM502 To DP Road Monday

COUNTY News:

Crews from Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Department, working in conjunction with local police officers, will assist in the transport of an oversized load between 6-7 a.m. Monday.

During the morning hours, the transport company will be moving the load from the bottom of Totavi Hill, up N.M. 502 to DP Road.

Caja Fire On Española Ranger District 70 Percent Contained

The Caja Fire has consumed 158 acres and is now 70 percent contained.

Lightning sparked the fire Sunday at Colorado Peak on the Caja del Rio Plateau in the Española Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF).

Strategy: The strategy for the Caja Fire is full suppression. Firefighters have taken advantage of natural and manmade barriers, including the two-track road, to secure the Caja Fire’s perimeter. Crews continue to work the edges of the fire to make sure the containment lines remain secure.

All Five Los Alamos Elementary Schools Transition To Hybrid Learning Model Beginning Monday Sept. 21

Earlier this evening (Thursday), the Los Alamos School Board unanimously voted to have all five elementary schools transition to the hybrid learning model beginning Monday Sept. 21.

The hybrid model consists of students physically attending school two days a week and working remotely three days a week.

Half of the students attend on Monday and Tuesday (green track) and the other half attend on Thursday and Friday (gold track).
