Posts From The Road: Happy Independence Day America!

Big Timber, Mont.: We have traveled to Big Timber for the past four years to attend a RV Campout with several other RVers who own Pleasure-Way RVs. Our gathering is the weekend of the Sweet Grass County Festival, which is similar to the Los Alamos Fair and Rodeo weekend. One of our traditions is to attend the parade each year. The flags shown were a part of the parade including the US flag, the POW-MIA flag, the US flag honoring Search and Rescue and EMS (Emergency Medical Service) personnel (orange stripe), and the US flag honoring and supporting the police (blue stripe). Fr. Glenn: ‘And I Will Give You Rest.’

By Fr. Glenn Jones

I was at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe the other day, officiating at the last farewell to a beloved former parishioner—a young wife and mother who succumbed, after many years’ valiant struggle, to unrelenting cancer. A privilege and blessing to be able to do this one last service for her, it was even more so to have visited and ministered to her at UNM Hospital in her last days … to spend time with this gentle and faithful woman who strengthened others by her resolute determination, and to be able to assure her of the eternal rest offered by God.

Wandering afterwards through the Read More

Home Country: We’re All In The Same Boat This 4th Of July

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

“Ain’t the same, is it?” asked Windy. He sipped some more coffee.

“Know what you mean,” Doc said. “Doesn’t seem right, somehow.”

“Guess we got to, howsomever.”

“Afraid so.” Doc sipped some coffee, too. “But you know, there isn’t a Fourth of July parade that’s worth your life.”

To be honest, the elder folks in our community prolonged the Fourth of July plans until the last minute. I think it’s a sign of our great trust in science, scientists, and our doctors that made us wait so long before shelving the parade this year.

But if you look at it from another angle, it actually brings Read More

All world travelers have seen pasta dishes representing the cultures of the world with recipes varying from Italian Spaghetti to German Spätzle to Chinese Chow Mein.

It is an inexpensive comfort food that is accessible to all pocketbooks. Pasta dishes have become somewhat universal although the origins of pasta can be traced back to 500 B.C. pre-Ancient Rome and the Etruscan civilization.

Shared widely by the Etruscan’s, everybody wants to lay claim to its invention including Marco Polo enthusiasts who claim he brought Read More

CYFD Updates Nondiscrimination Policy For All Youth

CYFD News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department (CYFD) announced a new directive to help better support LGBTQIA+ youth in care.

The nondiscrimination policy is the most inclusive and robust the Department has followed to date.

“We know LGBTQIA+ youth are underrepresented in the child welfare system, and unfortunately are still shunned by family members at an alarming rate just because of sexual orientation or other factors,” Secretary Brian Blalock said. “As an agency, we want to send the clear message that we support all of our youth. Fr. Glenn: A Chosen Race

By Fr. Glenn Jones

As you know all too well, the issue of race and racism has dominated the last couple of months, despite even the COVID-19 pandemic. This emphasis on eliminating racism and bigotry is a wonderful goal without doubt, but counterproductive if violence and property destruction worsens the disease rather than cures it, for one does not solve injustice by being unjust—the obvious “two wrongs don’t make a right” wisdom.

So, in combating bigotry, we mustn’t cultivate bigotry by inadvertently sowing weeds of resentment with the good wheat of equality and true growth. True peace requires Read More

Home Country: Summer Vacation

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

When the world is hot and my skin is fried, scratching from the constant dry, let the clouds boil up, boil up high. And then shade the earth with the darkening sky and bring the secrets and the smell of rain. The coolness and the blessed rain, again.

Our land is brown but blessed, stressed in the heat, the shiny heat of day. The slender green of rivers slide along, striving to continue, to feed its own along the banks, the banks where the dust rises. Rises, powdery clomp by clomp as we walk, walk the shady way.

And though the heat, the dryness of heat, pushes down our weary feet, Read More
