Letter to the Editor: Straightening Record on Several Levels
I noticed the column by Ms. Gunther in the Los Alamos Daily Post. It is an unfortunate combination of rehashing a past issue and conflating political posturing with practical policy.
Since I strongly support New Mexico based businesses (see the business-related bills that I advocated) and have a strong record of encouraging New Mexico business development, the column is particularly disingenuous.
A forthcoming column (perhaps columns—this is not a simple subject) will discuss my corporate tax policy position in detail. However, in the interim, Read More

Letter to the Editor: Hall Decent But Richard Far Superior
By Betty Ann Gunther
Jim Hall is a decent person, but we have a far superior Democratic candidate by the name of Stephanie (Garcia) Richard, who is running against him for representative to the New Mexico House of Representatives (Dist. 43.)
Jim Hall has been in the job as an appointee and has supported Republican issues even at the expense of Los Alamos County during the brief tenure of his appointment.
After it was revealed that a press release from Jim Hall claiming endorsements from Democratic Senators was not accurate, I found myself disappointed in Jim Hall’s campaign.
He, and his campaign, Read More
Column: Checks and Balances
By George Chandler
“Checks and balances” is the phrase that describes the interactions among the branches of a government that provides for limiting governmental excess by the separation of powers into legislative, executive and judicial sectors.
For example in the first instance, the federal government, the legislature passes laws but those laws can only be enforced by the executive and interpreted by the judicial, the legislature can remove judges or presidents and controls their budgets but is itself greatly constrained by being bifurcated.
And so on. In the extreme these Read More

Garcia Richard: State Education Reform Must Start with Early Reading
Column by Stephanie Garcia Richard, Democratic Candidate for State Rep, District 43
As kids from Los Alamos and around the state get back to school, and the election season begins to gear up, the important role of education in our state’s future becomes more and more apparent.
Schools and classrooms may not share top billing in this season’s political debates, but it’s one of the most important issues for me.
Maybe that’s because I’m on the front lines. I teach third grade and have been a classroom teacher for over ten years. I have taught in charter schools, BIA schools and public schools. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Ashley Pond Park Really Should Go Forward
By Kristin Henderson
Candidate for Los Alamos County Council
Since I am running for a seat on the County Council, I would like to clarify my position about projects that have already gone through the community vetting process and been approved by Council, as my attendance at a recent Ashley Pond project meeting was noted in a recent front page article in the Monitor.
I am in favor of moving forward with projects that have already had public input and then are approved by Council. That includes this one.
The meeting I attended was about the Ashley Pond project, which includes improving ADA access, Read More
