Fifteen Topper Wrestlers Heading To State Meet

Topper wrestlers display their gold medals won at the district meet Saturday in Española. The meet establishes seeding for the state meet this weekend at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. Toppers Fall To Sundevils 50-65

Harrison Frank drives through traffic on his way to the basket in  the 2nd quarter, he was the Topper’s high point scorer with 21 points, which included 4-3’s in a game against the Espanñla Sundevils Friday night in Griffith Gymnasium. The Toppers fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and trailed by 10 points throughout the rest of the game as the two teams played even and the Sundevils won 65-50. The Toppers continue to improve, but the Toppers had no answer for the Sundevils fast paced game. The next game will be played in Taos Thursday Feb.

Toppers Varsity Girls Basketball Fall To St. Pius Sartans

Toppers Varsity girls basketball team hosted the St. Pius Sartans at home Saturday in Griffith Gymnasium.

The first half was hard fought, ending in a 21-21 tie. Despite strong defense by the Toppers, the Sartans slowly pulled away to win the match 41-50.

Becca Green lead the team with 17 points, followed by Natalie Gallegos with 10.

Toppers Host Cleveland Storm In Dual Meet

Teke Nieto wrestling in the 132-lb weight class rolls his opponent over in preparation for the pin. Nieto won with a pin in the 2nd period in a dual match with the Cleveland Storm Wednesday afternoon in the Auxiliary Gymnasium at Los Alamos High School. This match was scheduled to prepare the Topper wrestlers for the upcoming state meet Feb. 21-22 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. The Storm is a 6A wrestling program leading the state in the rankings, so they were very tough. This gave the Toppers a chance to experience stiff competition before the state meet. Toppers Drop District Game To Elkettes 44-39 (VIDEO)

Becca Green battles Tonni Aquino for a rebound under the Topper basket in a district game played Tuesday night in Griffith Gymnasium. Green was the top scorer for the Toppers with 17 points. The Toppers and the Elkettes played mostly even throughout the game with the Elkettes leading the first half but the Toppers led at the end of the 3rd quarter and were within striking distance as the game drew to a close, but were not able to close out the game and the Elkettes won 44-39. Los Alamos Hockey Sweeps Amarillo On Home Ice

The Los Alamos Hockey Team swept the Amarillo Big Texan Bulls in a two-game series played this past Saturday and Sunday at the County Ice Rink. In Saturday night’s game Los Alamos won by a score of 7-3, in spite of the score, both teams played an exciting hard-fought game to the enjoyment of the crowd. Brian Owen feels the full effect of the Taos defense under the Topper basket in a game played Friday night in Griffith Gymnasium. The two teams were pretty evenly matched and the game went into overtime with the Tigers pulling off the win 85-75. The game was very exciting with many score changes and lots of action.  The Toppers game continues to improve, as they won the game against St Pius played Saturday in Albuquerque. Local Groundhog Predicts Chiefs Will Win Super Bowl

This morning in the eastern part of the country, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow and so an early spring is predicted. However, here in Los Alamos the local groundhog seems more interested in predicting the winner of today’s super bowl, likely because his handlers are originally from Kansas. Courtesy photo

Punxsutawney is a borough in the south of Jefferson County, Penn., 84 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It was incorporated in 1850.

With a population of 5,962 as of the 2010 census, Punxsutawney is the largest incorporated municipality in Jefferson County.
