SFNF: Conejos Fire In Jemez Grows To 24 Acres

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) have determined that the lightning-caused Conejos Fire on the Jemez Ranger District is a good candidate to manage to improve forest conditions and reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire in the future.

The Conejos Fire was discovered Monday night on Conejos Peak adjacent to Forest Road 266, about 4 miles northeast of the Paliza Campground and 5 miles from the community of Ponderosa.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced Monday $14 million in awards to 10 universities across the country to pursue fusion energy research at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, Calif.
 
A major goal of the research is to develop and test innovative methods for understanding and sustaining high-temperature fusion plasmas, a key enabling step towards making fusion a virtually limitless source of practical energy.

SANTA FE The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) discovered a lightning-caused ignition Monday night on Conejos Peak on the Jemez Ranger District adjacent to Forest Road 266 and about 4 miles northeast of the Paliza Campground and 5 miles from the community of Ponderosa.
 
Estimated at 3-5 acres, the Conejos Fire is creeping and slowly backing in primarily ponderosa pine forest.

The Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the implementation of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) 2019 Wildland Fire Mitigation and Forest Health Plan (Plan).
 
The FONSI was based on the analysis presented in the Final Supplemental Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Wildfire Hazard Reduction and Forest Health Improvement Program at LANL that there would be no significant effect on the human environment from Plan implementation.

Business Owner Shoots At Burglars In Velarde

The New Mexico State Police investigated a shooting Tuesday involving a business owner in Velarde in Rio Arriba County.
 
Initial investigation shows at about 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a burglary in progress at Mike’s Mini-Mart Gas Station in Velarde.
 
When officers arrived on scene, they encountered the owner of the gas station. Officers learned the business owner, who lives on the property, heard his alarm sounding from his gas station and went to investigate. When the owner arrived at his business, he encountered a male suspect inside the gas station.
