Formerly Incarcerated People Can Now Vote
This election is the first time that individuals leaving correctional facilities can register and vote, even if they are on probation and parole. The law that allowed people who had served their time for felony convictions to vote had been on the books but was snared in bureaucracy until 2023.
The New Mexico Voting Rights Act, passed that year, enabled the law and was upheld by the Santa Fe District Court, which required implementation by the Secretary of State and county clerks.

FBI: Mescalero Man Charged With Assault Of Minor

ALBUQUERQUE — A Mescalero man has been charged by criminal complaint with multiple counts of sexual abuse for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Thomas Lee Chaffins, 35, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, appeared before a federal judge Oct. 10 and was detained pending trial.
According to the criminal complaint, Sept. 27, 2024, Chaffins engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old girl, identified as Jane Doe. In November 2023, the Santa Fe Conservation Trust (SFCT) accepted the donation of a conservation easement over 58 acres of land along the Rio Grande in La Mesilla.
The Aeby family generously chose to grant this conservation easement to protect their land from development and provide continued public access to the river.

Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA) had short notice of having a booth on Sunday at Smith’s in Los Alamos. The local non-profit is collecting cards and pet treats and toys for local Veterans, two animal shelters and messages to mail to local military serving across the nation.
Several blankets and towels were dropped off on Sunday for Vets with Pets, along with the donation of funds to buy pet treats and food.
