Letter to the Editor: Catch and Release … Fine, If You Are Going Fishing

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

In a recent letter, Tina Andres indicates she will vote to retain Judge Sheri Raphaelson on the 1st Judicial District. Ms. Andres also referred to my “Catch and Release” editorial a few months back referring, of course, to Judge Raphaelson’s decisions in the matter of a local case that repeatedly came before her, first at trial and later because of a probation violation.

Readers should be aware that criticism of Judge Raphaelson’s performance on the bench go beyond those offered by citizens of Los Alamos who were impacted by a single case. Read More

Yang: Follow-up On ‘Reluctant Leaders’ And ‘Followership’

Follow-up On “Reluctant Leaders” And “Followership”
By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

First, a little humor (at someone’s small expense) on how data-driven decisions without context can be colossally stupid. Mr. Ben Bernanke’s recent application for refinancing his D.C. house was turned down.  Mr. Bernanke, you recall, was the former chairman of the Federal Reserve. According to the writer of the NY Times article (click here), the cause probably stemmed from Mr. Bernanke’s employment status, which changed from an 11-year salaried position to commission-based income (which includes $250,000 Read More

By JODY JONES

Tuesday night, Sept. 30, the Los Alamos County Council approved changes to the existing Animal Code.

One of the changes will have adverse consequences on anyone else whose neighbors allow their dogs to bark excessively. The existing ordinance had a section that stated that “no person shall own or keep any animal, licensed or not, which by barking or making of other noises causes annoyance to the neighborhood or to passersby … “. The proposed change to this section allowed dogs to bark “continuously for more than 10 minutes or intermittently

Letter to the Editor: I Adamantly Do Not Support Charter Being Changed

GERALD SANTOS
Los Alamos

Mr. (George) Chandler, I am not a former utilities board member but I adamantly do not support our charter being changed for the following reason.

Our city government i.e.: the County Council has absolutely no restraint in spending. They are so much like our federal government that it boggles the imagination as to how they can campaign and lie to the people of Los Alamos that they will be fiscally responsible. How can someone claim to be fiscally responsible when they spend our tax dollars like a spoiled teenager with daddy’s credit card. And you want to give then the keys Read More

Letter to the Editor: They’re Caught In A 1960’s Time Warp

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

If you’re paying attention to the ongoing battle over the utilities charter amendment, Question 2 on the upcoming ballot, you may wonder at the fervor of those who oppose the amendment. All are former members of the utilities board (Wismer calls them Utilities Board Alumni, or UBA), or former managers of the utilities department.

Three Charter Review Committees (1994-1995, 2010-2012, 2013) recognized problems including accountability and liability, ambiguous language, the need for a process of dispute resolution between the council and a too-independent Read More
