By MARK JONES, ChairThe United States used over 100 billion plastic bags in 2009. Significant resources are used to create these bags –oil or natural gas are used as the feedstock. And considerable energy is used transporting them to the stores where they are dispensed.
The very idea of using scarce and expensive resources on an item intended to be used once, for a few hours, and then thrown away is the antithesis of sustainability.

Los Alamos County would like to remind property owners that the second installment for 2014 property tax bills becomes delinquent after Monday, May 11.
Payment must either be made in person at the 311 Customer Care Center by 5 p.m., May 11 or postmarked by midnight that same day to avoid late payment penalty and interest charges.

Geologist Patrick Rowe will lead another outing for PEEC, this time to look for fossils at Battleship Rock in the Jemez Mountains.
In this area Madera Limestone is prevalent, which has long been known for its wonderfully preserved marine fossils. The outing will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 11 at the “old PEEC” at 3540 Orange St. It is free to attend, but registration is required.
