Los Alamos County has big goals and plans for its environmental sustainability.
During the Feb. 17 County Council meeting, Sustainability Manager Angelica Gurule laid out what some of these objectives are: reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, becoming a carbon neutral electric provider by 2040 and phasing out natural gas in the County’s operations by 2050 and in the general community by 2070.

FBI: Zuni Man Sentenced For Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE — A Zuni man was sentenced to ten years in prison for sexual abuse.
There is no parole in the federal system.
According to court records, Aug. 19, 2023, Stanton Hannaweeke, 63, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Zuni, engaged in a nonconsensual sexual act with Jane Doe.
Hannaweeke pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse. Upon his release from prison, Hannaweeke will be subject to ten years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.

SANTA FE — The Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team has completed the annual population count and documented the population increased to a minimum of 319 at the end of 2025, which is up from the minimum count of 286 in 2024. This is a consistent growth pattern for more than a decade.

Feb. 23, 2026, New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving an NMSP Sergeant on US Highway 285, south of Vaughn in Guadalupe County, New Mexico.

Gessing: Medical Malpractice Success A Win, But More Needed

The passage of medical malpractice reform is the most important public policy success in New Mexico in more than a decade. It took support from New Mexicans of every political stripe and a bi-partisan coalition in the Legislature to achieve this success, but at long last the State’s malpractice-driven doctor shortage may be over.
In addition to the medical malpractice bill, the Legislature entered New Mexico into the national doctor compact and enacted a $10K tax credit for physicians. Combined, this may be enough to start turning the tide. Read More
