By BECKY RUTHERFORDI’ve been in cybersecurity for a little over a year, and I decided it was about time I went to an InfoSec conference.
Defcon/Black Hat in Vegas sounded intimidatingly huge; I wanted something less terrifying. A friend suggested DerbyCon. I was still a bit intimidated by the idea of attending an InfoSec conference, but then I heard about it from several other colleagues Read More
Posts From The Road: Badlands National Park
Overview: We entered the Badlands National Park at the eastern entrance, which is about 70 miles east of Rapid City, S.D. and just a short drive off of I-90. The Ben Reifel Visitors Center is near the entrance and is a good place to get park information and maps. Shown is a view near the visitors center as you begin the 39-mile loop drive through the park. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com
Vivid Colors: In the late spring the grasses are still a lush green giving a pleasing contrast to the rugged rock pinnacles, buttes and mounds, which make up the park. The formations can be almost white to American Red Cross New Mexico Chapter Seeks Volunteers To Join Disaster Action Team

Los Alamos County Firefighters Remember 9/11
Los Alamos County firefighters set out on a track Saturday on Pajarito Mountain to remember and honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on American soil. They are carrying a 26-pound air pack in full dress on the one mile trek with a 1,000 foot rise in elevation to mimic the stairs the firefighters experienced on that tragic day rushing to rescue people in the World Trade Center in New York City. Fr. Glenn: Please … Affirm Me!
By Fr. Glenn Jones
Was looking at Facebook this morning (yes, kids; old Fr. Glenn knows about Facebook), and noted that the number of “If you believe/agree with this, share!” or the guilt-attempting: “I bet I won’t get even 1 share!” posts. And, of course, who has not received myriad requests to “like” this or that, or to become “friends” with people of whose identity you have no clue—a “friend” of a friend of a friend of…” …in their attempt to “collect” as many “friends” as possible.
The trend is rather disturbing, actually—the persons posting such things seeming to be pleading: “Please … Read More
How The Hen House Turns: Communication Between Animals
Wild California turkeys ‘communicating’. Courtesy photoWe humans are so focused on our verbal ways of communicating, it is easy to overlook the more subtle methods used by plants and animals.
However, that topic has appeared in some excellent books (The Hidden Life Of Trees and The Inner Life of Animals: What They Feel by Peter Wohlben )
Communication between living beings, and between themselves and their environments, is not limited to sound. Smell and taste play large roles in animal and plant communication. A giraffe can smell danger when eating. Read More

Weekly Fishing Report: Sept. 15, 2019
By GEORGE MORSE
After a week of unseasonably warm weather for late August and early September the weather turned noticeably cooler today. It felt more like September.
The streamflows have held up well throughout the summer and the trout have come through in good shape. Fall angling, with its cooler temperatures and beautiful colors, promises to be excellent.
One spot I would like to point anglers to is Laguna del Campo near Los Ojos. This little lake received a stocking Sept. 4 of 120 big rainbow trout that averaged 18.7 inches in size. There were Read More
