It’s the time in the election cycle when legislators decide if they are going to run again. The 2024 June primary season is 11 months away, which, to the average voter, may seem like a lifetime. But to legislators and other candidates, it’s a time of decision making. The gathering of petition signatures begins in early October and incumbent legislators will need to raise money prior to the “prohibited fundraising period” before the next legislative session.

Senators Ben Ray Luján, Susan Collins Reintroduce Legislation to Protect Native American Children
U.S. SENATE News:
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) reintroduced the Native American Child Protection Act (NACPA), bipartisan legislation that authorizes three programs that ensure Tribes have the tools needed to treat, prevent, investigate and prosecute Native American child abuse and neglect.

FBI: Santa Fe Man Pleads Guilty To Firearms Offense
FBI News:
ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced July 14 that Gilbert Michael Coriz pled guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Coriz, 37, of Santa Fe, will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
A federal grand jury indicted Coriz Dec. 8, 2021. According to court records, Jan. 1, 2021, officers from the Santa Fe Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on Camino Capitan. Read More

The Los Alamos Retirement and Senior Organization (LARSO) is hosting an 8-Ball Tournament 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 11. All ages are welcome to participate. Registration is required by 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the event. Call 505.662-8920 to reserve a spot.
Both the Betty Ehart Senior Center in Los Alamos and the White Rock Senior Center have billiard tables. Billiards is a favorite pastime of people of all ages. At the centers the games are played casually and for social purposes. Anyone can learn and continue to play throughout their lives.

The unrelenting heat wave that held a firm grip on New Mexico this past week continues to plague the state. There are encouraging signs that the high pressure dome will weaken later this month and the monsoonal moisture may finally find its way to New Mexico.
Until it does, fishing will be best early in the morning and late in the evening. Streamflows continue to drop and anglers are encouraged to let the trout rest in the middle of the day when the stress of the heat will make it difficult for them to survive being caught and released.

Name Suggestions For New Geese Pour Into Daily Post!
The Los Alamos Daily Post has received more than 200 name suggestions for the two new geese, (shown here with Ed and Gwen) relocated last Thursday to Ashley Pond. Someone had abandoned the pair as goslings at the pond in May. They were too young to be on their own. LAPD’s Animal Control moved them to a safe location and recently had them examined by Veterinarian Kathleen Ramsay before returning them Thursday to the pond. Jeremy Golston Tapped To Lead Jemez Ranger District
SANTA FE – Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) Supervisor Shaun Sanchez announced today the selection of Jeremy Golston as the District Ranger for the Jemez Ranger District.
Golston previously served as the Recreation Program Manager for the SFNF. In his new role, Golston will oversee the management, conservation and enhancement of about 245,000 acres in the Jemez Mountain range. The Jemez District is popular for recreation, includes impressive geological formations and unique wildlife, and is rich in archaeological resources and traditional uses.
