Weekly Fishing Report: June 6

By GEORGE MORSE
Los Alamos Daily Post
Sports and Outdoors

After the May 29 fishing report was compiled, several events happened that closed some of the fishing areas mentioned in the report to anglers. Santa Fe National Forest closed its lands May 30 to all recreational activities due to the extreme fire danger. The areas that this affected included all streams in the Jemez Mountain area, Fenton Lake State Park and San Gregorio Lake near Los Alamos. The closure remains in effect.

The Seven Springs Kids Pond was open last week and the fishing was very good. It will close for fishing Wednesday

Letter To The Editor: No Matter How You Wish To Weave This Gun Control issue … It All Begins At Home

By DIMAS M. CHAVEZ
Formerly of Los Alamos

As a former Los Alamos resident who now resides in Potomac, Md., I wish to comment on the letter to the editor submitted by Mr. Robert Visel, titled “Stop Blaming Inanimate Object”. Allow me to take you for a walk down memory lane regarding Los Alamos.

I moved to Los Alamos with my family as a 6-year-old child Aug. 15, 1943. Upon arriving at the Main Gate we were greeted by fully armed Military Police, and a huge Army Tank that stood like a sentry on a hillside just behind the security gate with its large barrel pointed down towards the entry point of

Letter To The Editor: What Los Alamos Pride Means To Me

By SAMUEL BUELOW
Los Alamos

I first heard the term “transgender” in 2001, when I was a senior at LAHS. Although the school had started a Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) the year before, it wasn’t until the spring semester of 2001 that they announced their meetings over the school loudspeaker, inviting the whole student body. A few friends and I decided to check it out, and it was there that I first heard the word. I had no idea what it meant, and was too afraid to ask, but something deep inside said that maybe, just maybe, this was me.

When I got to college, and finally had access to both the internet and an extensive Read More

Letter To The Editor: Let’s Show We Are A Community Of Peace, Harmony And Acceptance

By LAURI Van LYSSEL
Los Alamos

I am a Republican. A conservative. A Christian. I am probably considered to be the least likely advocate and supporter of the LGBTQ community. But I also have two lesbian daughters who are married to two beautiful women.

Together we have marched for their rights, their voice, and their safety. In California we fought against Prop 8, a segregation of a certain peoples, enduring name calling, threats. One of my daughters got shot one evening while marching.

Is that the type of legacy we want to put forth here? No! A resounding No! Welcoming Pride to our community is a step Read More

Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Has Brains And Integrity … She’ll Decide Matters Based On Fact And Law

By KYLE WHEELER
Los Alamos

The fact that Sheriff Lucero endorses Pete Sheehey for state representative is because as a county councilor, Pete Sheehey supported increasing the budget to cover the sheriff’s duties to approximately $200,000 per year and expand the office beyond what is allowed per the Charter, our county’s governing document.

Sheriff Lucero has been involved in several expensive and time-consuming lawsuits against the county, and I truly believe that many residents are tired of the waste that has been caused by this.

I personally think Pete Sheehey has enabled the almost constant Read More

Fr. Glenn: Off You Go!

By Rev. Glenn Jones

It seems that the Faith and Science forum will be starting up again this week, with an apparent focus on evolution for this summer season. Should be some interesting talks.

Even though the existence of the numerous different Christian denominations should make the fact obvious, many non-Christians seem to be unaware that Christians are not monolithic in many basic beliefs—evolution being one of them. Beliefs concerning the Bible and the interpretation of scripture—especially of the Creation accounts of Genesis—range Read More
