Weekly Fishing Report: Oct. 31, 2019

By GEORGE MORSE

Los Alamos Daily Post

The weather has turned sharply colder and it won’t be long until the small, higher elevation lakes in Northern New Mexico will begin to freeze over.

A local angler recently reported ice forming on Hopewell Lake between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras. The ice would melt off during the day. The Canjilon Lakes, Trout Lakes, Lagunitas Lakes and others will soon be frozen.

The fishing can be quite good at this time before the lakes become unfishable. The larger reservoirs and lakes take longer to start to freeze and many

Morrie Pongratz would be a wonderful addition to the Los Alamos School Board. I was honored to have the opportunity to work with Morrie for four years during my time in the Los Alamos High School Key Club.

As a timid first-year member, I felt more welcome in the club after interacting with Morrie’s warm and spirited personality. Each meeting, I noticed him in the back of the room, taking scrupulous notes and Read More

Letter To The Editor: Janecky Endorses Baker

By LOUISE A. JANECKY (LOUI)
Los Alamos

District 4 Voters,

I am writing this letter to ask that you first and foremost vote in the current election.

I am also writing to ask that you support Julia Baker for our LAPS District School board seat. She is the candidate most able to serve you well.

I held this seat and served as your school board member (secretary, vice president and president) in the past. I know how much work it takes to be an effective school board member. School board members attend multiple meetings a month (not just school board meetings and work sessions, but they also attend joint meetings

Letter To The Editor: Hargraves Endorses Bernstein

By BILL HARGRAVES
School Board Member
Los Alamos Public Schools

I am a member of the LAPS School Board and I endorse Christine Bernstein for the LAPS School Board (District 3 Aspen).

Christine has been an active, in-the-classroom teacher for over 20 years, including several years in Los Alamos Public Schools, giving her an expertise in areas that distinguish her from her opponent. If elected, Christine would be the only Board member also actively teaching students.

As a teacher, she has the knowledge and the skills to work effectively with other Board members, lead committees, and make real

By DAVID HAMPTON
Board Member
Los Alamos Retirement Community

I have recently been elected to the Board of Directors of the Los Alamos Retirement Community (LARC), which comprises the Sombrillo and Aspen Ridge facilities in Los Alamos.

Our management company informed us at our September meeting that annual liability insurance costs rose 77 percent in July, and the corresponding deductibles rose 900 percent, and that these increases are unsustainable.

These increases seem to be attributable to the high degree of litigation occurring in New Mexico. While steps are being undertaken

Catch Of The Week: Alexa & Google Voice In The House

By BECKY RUTHERFORD
Los Alamos

“My son asked why I speak so softly in the house … I said I was afraid Mark Zuckerberg was listening. He laughed. I laughed. Alexa laughed. Siri laughed.”

So runs a popular internet meme about privacy, or the lack thereof, in today’s connected world. Funny, right?

Amazon Echo and other voice assistant devices (like Google Home) are great and can make life easier but at the cost of privacy. As of January 2019, Amazon had sold more than 100 million Alexa enabled devices. One in five adults owns a voice assistant, with Alexa having 70 percent market share and Google  24 Read More

World Futures: Data, Information, Knowledge – Part 4

By ANDY ANDREWS
Los Alamos World Futures Institute

In the previous three columns we looked at data, information and knowledge, noting data and information is the stuff that is “out there” and knowledge is th stuff that we have internalized be it in our brains or encoded in our bodies.

Last time I concluded that it incorporates the who, what, when, why and where of right and wrong and the conscious and unconscious decisions we make. But the “how” is part of intelligence, the ability of applying knowledge and taking action, making decisions, and perhaps discovering new knowledge for
