Smokin’
Column by Bonnie J. Gordon
Although I’ve always been a fairly girly girl, I try not to let it stand in the way of enjoying those things usually associated with guys.
I don’t watch sports or play video games, but I have been known to play poker, drink single malt scotch and hang out at the track.
I’ve never felt more like a member of the boys’ club than when I’m smoking a cigar. I stumbled into the pleasures of a good cigar when I set out to buy a gift for a cigar-smoking friend.
This friend lets me hang out on his boat, drink lots of beer and act really silly a few times a year, which greatly enhances my mental Read More
Editorial Images – New Drive Throughs
The new trend that is sweeping Los Alamos … customer initiated drive throughs! It’s hoped that by having more new drive thru windows, less parking spaces will be needed downtown as shoppers will not have to stop to shop or get information. Let’s hope it works and we can reduce the asphalt in Los Alamos!

New Mexico on Opioids
Column by Rep. Jim Hall
On May 1, I was one of about 20 legislators — representing both parties and both chambers — selected to attend a conference on opioid drug (e.g., oxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, hydrocodone) misuse in New Mexico.
Medical professionals and senior state officials also attended. Two quotes from the conference demand our attention.
- “New Mexico leads the U.S. in deaths from drug overdoses, now exceeding deaths from motor vehicle crashes.”
- “Unintentional overdose deaths from prescription opioid drugs have nearly tripled from 2000 to 2009
Stimulating the Sustainability Discussion
Column by Tom Nagawiecki
The lights dim. The bass beat is thumping. The spotlight flashes to life and the announcer roars “Here is the starting lineup for your Environmental Sustainability Board.
Serving as Board Chair is White Rock resident Liza Ermeling.
Assisting as Vice-Chair is Stephen Tenbrink.
Rounding out the Board lineup are Larry Warner, Brooke Davis, Walter Tuzel, Steve Boerigter and Don Machen.”
Okay, so the Environmental Sustainability Board members may not be as famous as the starting five of your favorite sports team but we want to change that, at Read More
NM House District 43 Update
Column by Rep. Jim Hall
This is the second monthly column discussing a few of the concerns and issues that have come to me in New Mexico House District 43 in the past 30 days.
It is a short column intended to recognize both the diversity and community in this beautiful part of Northern New Mexico.
If anyone in District 43 has state government issues (1) that are referenced in the column or (2) are not being addressed, I welcome questions or comments.
During the last 30 days l gave three presentations on the last legislative session to local organizations.
Since the even-year sessions Read More
Today Marks Date Women Begin to Catch up to What Men Made Last Year
Column By Nina Thayer, AAUW, Leadership Corps
April 17 is the symbolic day this year when women will on average catch up with the amount men made in the previous year.
New statistics out this month show that New Mexico’s women make on average 77 percent of what our men make.
Forty years after the Women’s Movement of the early ‘70s, it is hard to imagine that this gender pay gap continues.
More women work outside the home than 40 years ago; more women attend college than 40 years ago; more women are the only wage earner for themselves and their family than 40 years ago.

I love lifestyles!
Column by Bonnie J. Gordon
Since I was a baby journalist in high school, people have been trying to convince me that I should be writing hard news.
Why, well meaning individuals keep asking me, should I be wasting my talents writing lifestyles and entertainment and features when I could be covering something “really important?”
News flash—I’m already writing about the really important stuff. Sure, crime, politics and county government are important. I’m glad other people want to write about them.
I’m convinced however, that soft news is just as important.
