FAMILY YMCA News:
A new Flamenco Dance for Beginners class begins at the Family YMCA in October:
YMCA members and non-members, men and women, boys and girls ages 10 and up welcome.
Flamenco dance has become a popular dance form worldwide because of its powerful lines, intense rhythms, and the beautiful traditional melodies that cannot help but inspire movement.
The dance comes from Southern Spain and is the unique art of the gypsies which combines the sounds and movements of Europe, India, and Northern Africa.
Flamenco Dance is accompanied by guitar, hand-clapping, singing and the heel-work of the dancer.
The warm-up will include jazz-style stretching and strengthening for the entire body and then move on to basic zapateado (percussive foot-work) and movement vocabulary of Spanish dance. Dancers will learn traditional dances and original choreography.
Guitarist Kevin Rendón will play for the class once each month. Contact Ellen Walton at ellenwalton@hotmail.com for class details and information on purchasing boots, shoes and practice skirts.
