The Los Alamos High School and Los Alamos Middle School speech and debate teams are hosting a waffle breakfast in conjunction with the Parajito Masonic Lodge to fund their trips to the National Speech and Debate Tournament this June in Dallas, Texas.
The waffle breakfast will take place 7:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Masonic Lodge on the corner of 15th Street and Canyon Road.
Tickets are $7 and can be purchased from any Hilltalker or Hawktalker speech and debate member. A ticket entitles bearer to enjoy all-you-can-eat waffles with a variety of topping choices, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, coffee, tea and juice.
Several LAHS Hilltalkers and former LAMS Hawktalkers qualified to attend the High School National Speech and Debate Tournament, including:
- Sudeep Dasari in International Extemporaneous Speaking (2nd time qualifier);
- Ani Nadiga in Worlds Debate;
- Will McCumber in Congressional Debate;
- Robert Zhu and Wilbur Wang in Policy Debate;
- James Sinnis and Ben Duan in Policy Debate;
- Katherine Wang in Lincoln Douglas Debate;and
- Becky Cai in Original Oratory.
These students and their teammates will be aiming to raise more than $3,000 at the waffle breakfast fundraiser to cover transportation and lodging costs in Dallas. LAMS Hawktalkers do not have to qualify to go to their Middle School National Speech and Debate Tournament, but this is an excellent opportunity for them to get national experience.
Hawktalkers Mike Peters and Malcolm Carr will be competing in Policy Debate, Malea Joyce will be competing in Speech events, and other Hawktalkers who are planning to go as well.
To date, this is the largest representation from Los Alamos at the National Speech and Debate Tournaments. To purchase a ticket, email Margo Batha, head coach of the LAHS Hilltalkers, at m.batha@laschools.net or Sherri Bublitz, head coach of the LAMS Hawktalkers, at s.bublitz.lams@gmail.com.
