SANTA FE — The New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office has begun a series of community events to share information about beneficial State Treasurer’s Office programs and engage in community discussions to collaborate with and offer support to local governments school, water and special districts, the disability community, banks and community organizations.
The first visit of the series began Sept. 9 in Las Cruces and Alamogordo.
Beyond managing more than $17 billion, the State Treasurer’s Office is strengthening its programs, including the State Treasurer’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (NM STABLE) program, which helps members of the disability community save and invest without losing access to essential benefits, and Financial Empowerment for Women. State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya is also undertaking initiatives such as implementing financial literacy as a high school graduation requirement, Baby Bonds and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in fund management.
“Outside of my constitutional and statutory responsibilities, I made a commitment to work with all New Mexicans to bridge the gap of inequity, and I believe the initiatives we are pushing forward will help us get closer to that goal,” Treasurer Montoya said. “These community events are intended to share knowledge and work together in collaboration with local leaders.”
The Treasurer’s Office will be meeting with school districts in Las Cruces and Alamogordo to discuss the importance of financial literacy in school curriculum. She also be hosting the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office Community Share and Listen event with several community organizations and local leaders.
“This is the start of a statewide initiative to visit as many communities and community leaders in New Mexico as possible because, at the end of the day, we love our state and want everyone to succeed because we are all in this together,” Treasurer Montoya said. “Thoughtful discussions with local leaders are the basis for implementing effective, meaningful, and lasting progress. I look forward to working with leaders across New Mexico to ensure every New Mexican has the tools and opportunity to succeed.”
