The Los Alamos High School girl’s golf team completed a very successful season competing against seven other schools in the New Mexico Class 5A state championship.
The two day tournament was held on the Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, NM. The course design posed a number of challenges the team typically did not encounter during the regular season, particularly the fast, multi-tiered greens. The challenges were compounded by cold weather and gusty winds on Monday.
Jennifer Necker carded a 95 on Monday for 12th place as the best 5A girls struggled to score in the mid-80s. Emily Moulton, Malorie Apgar, Leah Mountain and Faith Koh posted very respectable scores for a first day team score of 419, placing Los Alamos in 4th place behind Artesia, St. Pius X and Lovington and only one stroke ahead of Goddard.
Tuesday weather conditions were much improved as the girls teed off from the 10 hole. Apgar, Mountain and Koh posted scores within a couple of strokes of their Monday scores while Moulton and Necker improved by 14 strokes each.
The improvement was not enough to catch Lovington for 3rd place but maintained their margin over Goddard for 4th place. Necker’s 81 was the second lowest 18 hole score posted at the state championship behind Albuquerque Academy’s Katie Allen (79). The score moved Necker into a 6th place medal position.
