Fr. Glenn: The Question

By Fr. Glenn Jones

If there was [absolutely] nothing, whence came anything at all? If nothing existed, whence came existence? If all things have a source, from what does the first thing come?

Ooooo … the paradoxical question that at some time occupies musing minds of all. In fact, one of the great questions driving science itself. Even ancient philosophers like Plato and the pre-Socratics considered that question, formulating rudimentary ideas of atoms and “prime matter”—unformed “stuff” (by analogy think of modeling clay) which composed materiality.

An Open Book: Day Of Remembrance

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos
The anniversary of my father’s passing, or Yahrzeit in Yiddish, is a date that I have to track carefully on the Jewish calendar. On this modified lunar calendar, the observance of June 6, 2009 changes a few days forward or backward each year, and I have to look it up regularly.
But for my mother’s Yahrzeit, there is no tracking required. She died October 3, 2016, the first day of the Jewish year 5777. So, when we set the dinner table to observe and celebrate Rosh Hashanah, “the Head of the Year,” with the two lit tall candles, the ceremonial glass of wine and the braided bread,

Fr. Glenn: Caring For Lazarus

By Fr. Glenn Jones

First responders might find it interesting (hopefully edifying) to know that today (September 29) is the annual Catholic day for the commemoration of the archangels mentioned in scripture:  Michael, Gabriel and (in the Catholic and Orthodox scriptures) Raphael. Michael, of course, figures prominently in the book of Revelation as leader of angels in the depiction of the defeat of “the dragon” (Satan). Gabriel is in the Gospel of Luke and the prophet Daniel. And, finally, Raphael is a primary character in the book of Tobit. Whenever you see a depiction of an archangel, Read More

Fr. Glenn: Thicker Rug Needed

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

With the visit of President Trump to New Mexico recently, and with the division in the American political arena highlighted daily in the news, it seemed almost providential that one of the readings for the Catholic Mass this weekend was from St. Paul: “I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority….”  (1 Timothy 2:1) Well, in our day that can make many grind their teeth not a little. “What? Pray for Trump?!” or, in a blast from the past: “What! Pray for Obama?!”

Yes, absolutely … no matter Read More

Fr. Glenn: Please … Affirm Me!

By Fr. Glenn Jones

Was looking at Facebook this morning (yes, kids; old Fr. Glenn knows about Facebook), and noted that the number of “If you believe/agree with this, share!” or the guilt-attempting: “I bet I won’t get even 1 share!” posts. And, of course, who has not received myriad requests to “like” this or that, or to become “friends” with people of whose identity you have no clue—a “friend” of a friend of a friend of…” …in their attempt to “collect” as many “friends” as possible.

The trend is rather disturbing, actually—the persons posting such things seeming to be pleading: “Please … Read More

Fuselier: The Seeking Emotional System

By BOB FUSELIER

Some thoughts from science, life, and ancient religious texts

By BOB FUSELIER
Los Alamos

Some thoughts from science, life, and ancient religious texts

In an earlier essay, I touched on the choice that we share with all animals: either to go forward towards resources that sustain us or to draw away from that which can cause us harm. The emotional system that controls our forward motion has been labeled the Seeking emotional system by the noted neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp. While it’s needed for life, this emotional system can lead us into a lot of trouble.
