SFNF News:

SANTA FE  The Gilman Tunnels on Forest Road (FR) 376 have reopened on the Jemez Ranger District.

Closed since mid-June, the Gilman Tunnel corridor has undergone essential safety measures following several near misses with large boulders falling into the roadway. Road crews have stabilized the cliff walls within the box canyon and removed sections of loose rock along a portion of FR 376 between mile markers 0.1 and 5.5.

Keep in mind that although these measures have helped stabilize the canyon’s walls, weather events and natural erosion processes will continue to cause falling rocks to land on FR 376 at times. Situational awareness is always necessary while driving through this area, considering the unstable nature of these sheer walls.

Travelers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and follow safety considerations. Stopping or parking along the box canyon corridor is prohibited. Parking is available at the north end of the tunnels. Please be mindful of pedestrians as you drive through these historic tunnels and remember that rock climbing is forbidden.

The Gilman Tunnels were created during the 1920s to provide logging access to the railroad in this scenic valley of the Guadalupe River.
