SFCC News:The public is invited to a panel discussion and conversation on Muslims in the West.
Since the attacks in Paris, there has been a three-fold rise in hate crimes against Muslims. The SFCC President’s Diversity Advisory Committee presents an evening of conversation to help educate the community about hate crimes, Islam and the Muslim faith to increase awareness, present alternative observations and dispel negative misconceptions.
Learn about Islam, Muslims, the rights of Muslim women, and more. Participants will be asked to submit questions for the panelists. This event is free; but seating is limited.
Special Guests: Mayor Javier Gonzales and SFCC President Randy W. Grissom.
Panelists: Imam Shafi Abdul Aziz, Leader of the Masjid (Mosque) Abbas Akhil, President of the Islamic Center of New Mexico Christopher Adam, University of New Mexico, World Languages and Homeland Security Sabiha MashaAllah, local business owner Dr. Mariam Salas, Southwest Healthcare Shammara Henderson, Smart on Crime Assistant U.S. Attorney and a New Mexico FBI representative.
Moderators: Aamna Nayyar, Director of the Dental Department and Associate Professor, and Emily Stern, Coordinator, Center for Diversity and Integrated Learning.
The discussion is 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road, across from Santa Fe High School.
