SFCC News:SANTA FE –– Santa Fe Community College’s emerging writers will showcase their work during the Student Writing Awards Celebration at 6 p.m., Thursday April 28 at Collected Works Bookstore, 202 Galisteo St. The recipient of the Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship also will be announced.
More than a dozen writers representing the diverse community at SFCC will read from their winning works. Accolades, a booklet containing the pieces, will be available at the event and online at www.sfcc.edu.
In addition, the sixth annual winner of the Santa Fe Community College Foundation’s Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship will be announced. Named for the author of the 1968 classic Red Sky at Morning, the scholarship was initiated by author Michael McGarrity, arts advocate Charmay Allred and former city councilwoman Rebecca Wurzburger.
“Over the 10-plus years of the awards program, competing writers have grown in ability and aspiration,” Assistant Professor Daniel Kilpatric said, who is organizing the awards program for the seventh year.
Regardless of their experience, students’ reactions to being recognized are the same. “When students who had not thought of themselves as writers discover talent and passion for writing, then receive recognition for their writing, the experience can really change their perceptions about themselves,” Kilpatric said.
These are this year’s winners by category:
- Poetry – Winner: Ava Dasya Rasa; Runner-Up: Holly Baldwin; Honorable Mentions: Holly Baldwin, Nancy Beauregard, Nina A. Nguyen, Serena Rodriguez and Madeline Weider.
- Fiction – Winner: Jennifer Dickerson; Runner-Up: Aida Wester; Honorable Mentions: Holly Baldwin and Nancy Beauregard.
- Personal Essay – Winner: Aura Rose Jensen-Curtis; Runners-Up: Israel Benitez and Rachel Faith Joyce; Honorable Mentions: Holly Baldwin, Nancy Beauregard, Jonah Brenner and Melanie Lujan.
- Academic Essay – Winner: Allison Yates; Honorable Mentions: Aura Rose Jensen-Curtis and Abdullah Shah
Winners whose names appear more than once submitted more than one writing sample. The awards are sponsored by SFCC’s Office of Student Development, Student Government Association, the School of Liberal Arts and the SFCC Foundation.
