Los Alamos Middle School Spelling Bee Winners

Los Alamos Middle School held its annual spelling bee Wednesday. The winners include Michael Aslam, first place (eighth grader), Eli Irakm-Bent, second place (eighth grader), William McTeigue, third place (seventh grader) and Anna Clark (seventh grader) as fourth place alternate. The top three students will attend the district spelling bee in January at Chamisa Elementary School. Letter To The Editor: ‘Shared Traffic Lanes’

The County is experimenting with shared traffic lanes. The idea is straightforward, mark the lanes so that bicycles and cars have the same rights.
 
These lanes are now in place from Oppenheimer to 15th Street on Central Avenue. Imagine a bicycle coming east on Canyon in a bicycle lane then on to Central.
 
At Oppenheimer the cyclist enters a shared lane, there is no bicycle lane. Both the east bound and west bound lanes are shared, doubled yellow lines so that vehicles cannot cross into the oncoming lane.

Shelly Millsap, 51, a resident of Española, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2015.

Shelly was preceded in death by her aunt, Faye Davis, Emma Baird; grandparents, Lewis and Ollie Millsap, Frank and Adonelia Serrano; cousins, Andrew Casados, Edward Romero; uncle, Lewis Jr. Millsap.

Shelly loved children, she loved gardening, boating, and volunteering at the Española Community Market. Shelly was a loving caregiver, always had a smile for everyone. She was detail oriented and loved interior decorating. Shelly will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

IRS Early Interaction Initiative – Helping Employers Stay Current With Payroll Taxes

PHOENIX  The Internal Revenue Service has launched a new initiative designed to more quickly identify employers who are falling behind on their payroll or employment taxes and then help them get caught up on their payment and reporting responsibilities.
 
The effort is called the Early Interaction Initiative. The initiative is designed to help employers stay in compliance and avoid needless interest and penalty charges.

The Los Alamos Public Schools have received individual PARCC Score reports for students in grades 3-8.

The detailed student reports will help teachers and families further understand what students know and are able to demonstrate. Each student will receive one score report for English Language Arts (ELA) and one for mathematics.

Score reports include several sections. The first section is the Overview, which provides a student’s overall score and performance level.

For the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I prepared several salads for a large dinner party at PEEC on the theory that folks had consumed their fill of turkey, gravy, potatoes, and stuffing for three days and would welcome the change.
