North Mesa Loses Gas

More than 1,000 Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities’ customers on North Mesa lost natural gas just before noon today.

Gas construction work in the Kwage Mesa area, specifically a pipeline tie-in, unexpectedly depressurized the gas line feeding the North Mesa neighborhood.

DPU crews began an extensive restoration effort around 12:30 p.m., which includes shutting gas valves to each North Mesa customer, pressurizing the line, and revisiting each customer to turn gas back on and relight appliances.

Crews will be working around the clock to restore gas to all affected customers. Door tags are being left for customers who are not home when crews attempt to turn natural gas back on.

Those customers are encouraged to call the 311 Customer Care Center at 505-662-8333, which will stay open until 7 p.m. tonight for this purpose.

After 7 p.m., customers should call Police Dispatch at 505-662-8222. DPU staff will be dispatched throughout the evening to turn gas back on and relight appliances.

“We want to thank our North Mesa customers for their patience as we work to restore gas to the area,” Utilities Manager John Arrowsmith said in a news release.
