New Youth Resource Advocates At LAHS And LAMS

The Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) has hired two new Youth Resource Advocates (YRAs).
William High Eagle Sandoval and Elena Berliner, will join Santina Shije in serving teens who live in Los Alamos or attend school here. The YRAs provide wrap around case management and assistance to youth and their families in accessing comprehensive services in the community and at school. The YRAs assess needs, coordinates services and offers resources to youth in need of support.
Referrals are received from the community, the schools, and the juvenile probation office. The Youth Resource Advocates are available to help families connect to services, find the resources they need and overcome any barriers to seeking or receiving services.
Berliner will be working with high school age students and families. She has lived and worked in New Mexico since 2005. She most recently served with Rio Arriba County’s Intensive Community Monitoring Program.
In addition, she worked with El Centro Family Health on a grant that trained peer educators at ECFH’s School-based Health Center at Espanola Valley High School. Prior to her work in New Mexico, Berliner served with the California Department of Health’s Office of Family Planning as the Evaluation and Training/Technical Assistance liaison for the OFP’s Community Challenge Grant (teen pregnancy prevention) Program.

Her professional passions include preventing/reducing child poverty; community-school partnerships for building adolescent resiliency and parent education.

Sandoval will be working with both middle school and high school age students and families. He has been working with children and families for the past 28 years in both Denver, Colo., and Northern New Mexico. He has expertise in substance abuse prevention, intervention and mental health issues.
Sandoval is an experienced program manager, nationally known speaker, trainer, consultant and entrepreneur. His philosophy is to enjoy life and its sacredness.
