WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will participate in a moderated discussion Wednesday, hosted by the Christian Science Monitor before speaking at the Department’s National Lab Day on the Hill (The St. Regis Hotel 923 16th St. NW).

The Christian Science Monitor will host a breakfast that will feature a fireside discussion between Secretary Moniz and David Cook, Senior Editor and Washington Bureau Chief of the Christian Science Monitor, and a question and answer session with the audience. The event, titled “Beyond COP21,” will focus on steps the Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are taking to implement the COP21 climate agreement reached last year in Paris.

Later in the day, the Secretary will attend Lab Day on the Hill, this installment will focus on basic scientific research. Lab Directors and representatives from all 17 of DOE’s National Laboratories will be on hand to showcase demonstration projects in discovery science. Following opening remarks from Senators Dick Durbin, Jim Risch, Maria Cantwell, and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Secretary Moniz will moderate a fireside chat between Lab Directors, and members of industry and academia.

With origins in the Manhattan Project during World War II, DOE’s National Labs maintain multidisciplinary research capabilities with state of the art scientific tools and experts focused on some of the country’s more important priorities in science, energy and national security. National Lab scientists have won 80 Nobel Prizes in the sciences and generated technological advances that have led to entirely new industries.
