U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján
SANTA FE ― U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement Wednesday highlighting Women’s Equality Day, which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing a woman’s right to vote.
“Today we celebrate a monumental day for equality and justice in our nation’s history. Ninety-five years ago, to the tireless work of a group of dedicated advocates, the 19th Amendment was adopted, ensuring the right to vote for America’s women. Since that time, our nation has made significant progress as more and more women are leaders in business and government.
“As we remember this landmark achievement, we must also recommit to fighting for equal opportunity for women. With women still being paid on average only 78 cents for every dollar paid to men, and women of color earning even less on the dollar, there is still more work to be done. And with many women lacking paid sick days, paid family leave, and access to affordable, quality childcare, they too often face the difficult choice between their families’ health and a. By increasing opportunities and the economic security of America’s women we can grow our economy and help hard-working families get ahead and stay ahead, because when women succeed, America succeeds.”
